Chapter 15 - Trevor Watches the Video

For almost ten years Trevor had never watched the complete wedding footage.

He had seen clips.

Evidence segments.

Transcripts.

But not full sequence from Catherine walking toward roses through aftermath.

In therapy he decided.

He came to our house.

“Can I see?”

Catherine knew.

“The full file?”

“Yes.”

Jonathan had retired, but archived legal copy existed.

We obtained through proper counsel archive.

Trevor sat alone first.

Then asked Catherine to stay.

I stayed too.

Video began.

Catherine walking.

Madison holding folder.

Conversation.

“You forged my name.”

Then:

“Once Trevor controls company, nobody cares what you remember signing.”

Trevor’s face tightened.

Madison shoved.

Catherine fell.

Then Trevor entered frame.

He watched himself pause.

That pause destroyed him.

Two full seconds.

He could have helped.

Then he wrapped arm around Madison.

“Now she knows her place.”

Trevor stopped video.

Hands shaking.

“I don’t remember sounding like that.”

Catherine answered:

“You did.”

He covered face.

Then:

“Why didn’t you ever send this to me?”

“Because it wasn’t my job to force you to watch.”

He cried.

“I look…”

He could not say.

Then video continued.

Jennifer in mud.

Catherine’s face when Trevor did not help.

That was worse than words.

He paused again.

“Mom.”

“Yes.”

“I should have picked you up.”

“Yes.”

No soothing.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

Then Ray entering. Jonathan. board.

Trevor watched himself lunge toward papers.

He laughed bitterly.

“Still trying to grab.”

Yes.

Then video ended.

No music.

No redemption.

Just a file.

Trevor sat.

“I kept telling myself I was choosing wife.”

Catherine looked.

“You can choose spouse and still stop cruelty.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I used marriage as excuse because admitting she was wrong meant admitting plan was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Then he asked:

“Do you still think of me like that man?”

Catherine thought.

“No.”

His shoulders dropped.

“But I remember him.”

Trevor nodded.

“So do I.”

That distinction.

People can change without past disappearing.

Then he asked:

“Can we delete?”

“No.”

Legal archive remains.

“Your copy?”

Catherine looked.

“We can.”

We deleted personal duplicate from home system after confirming official records retained as required.

No need keep trauma accessible.

Trevor said:

“Thank you.”

Then he walked to kitchen.

Leah had brought Claire.

Claire ran.

“Daddy!”

He lifted.

Catherine watched.

A man who had once treated mother as obstacle now carrying daughter who would someday learn his history on age appropriate terms.

Then Claire asked:

“Why are you crying?”

Trevor smiled.

“I watched something I regret.”

“Can I watch?”

“No.”

Good.

Not every family truth belongs to child immediately.

Then:

“Did you say sorry?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded.

“Then okay.”

Child simplicity.

May you like

Not fully okay.

But enough for afternoon.
