A handwritten note is not proof of bribery.
Daniel reminded us immediately.
Robert had written:
CASSANDRA STERLING PAID F.D. 40K. ROUTE MAP?
Question mark.

Scanned bank deposit slip.

Who owned Prairie Advisory?
A registered agent led to a trust company.
Then bank subpoenas eventually traced funding.
Sterling Development.
Description:
Land consulting.
Did Frank perform legitimate consulting?
He said later he did after leaving county.
But payment came while still employed.
That mattered.
Then email.
Frank to Cassandra:
17B preferred alignment unchanged after committee Tuesday.
Cassandra:
Good. Need full parcel layer.
Frank:
Not through county email.
There.
That was not innocent consulting.
Then another:
Cassandra:
William would have wanted this kept inside family.
William had been dead.
Frank:
Your son knows?
Cassandra:
Not yet.
Interesting.
Preston may not have known origin of route data at first.
Then months later:
Preston to Cassandra:
How the hell did you know exact route?
Cassandra:
Your father had friends.
Preston:
That’s not an answer.
She hid bribery from him.
So Preston’s second date comment about Route 17B may have come from family conversation without knowing illegal source.
Again complexity.
Then after Robert questioned him, Preston asked Cassandra.
Message:
Bennett asked how I know 17B. Did you tell Robert?
Cassandra:
No. Say industry rumor.
Preston:
Is there a problem?
Cassandra:
Only if you make one.
That should have alarmed him.
Did he investigate?
No.
He accepted.
Then Sterling began buying.
Some deals legitimate.
Some ethically ugly.
At least two potentially fraudulent.
Robert started collecting.
Then 2024 ledger entry:
Frank says Cassandra has options before notice. Sarah dating Preston coincidence?
Robert questioned whether relationship itself was strategic.
He did not conclude.
Then a later entry:
Watched Preston with Sarah today. I think he loves her. That may be worse because love will make everyone excuse business.
I sat down.
Robert saw the exact complexity.
Then flash drive contained audio.
Robert and Frank Doyle.
Recorded with Frank’s knowledge?
Opening:
“Robert, turn that thing on if you want. I’m done carrying this.”
Good.
Frank admitted Cassandra paid for route information.
He claimed he needed money after gambling losses.
He sent preliminary maps.
He told her which parcels mattered.
Then:
“She started buying before public release.”
“Did Preston know?”
“Not at first.”
“When?”
“I don’t know.”
Then Frank said:
“When William was alive, Sterling had clean reputation. Cassandra got aggressive after.”
Then:
“Why tell me?”
“Because she asked for one more thing.”
“What?”
“Parcel tax distress list.”
County data identifying owners behind on property taxes.
Some public, some not easily compiled.
She wanted vulnerable sellers.
Frank refused? He said he gave a list once.
Then felt sick after Henry Lawson sold cheap.
He resigned.
Moved.
Robert convinced him to speak to Daniel later.
Did he?
No.
Frank disappeared from communication.
Why?
Fear of prosecution.
Daniel had been searching.

I answered:

I said nothing.

I looked at Robert’s ledger.

Then another flash drive folder.
Not route maps.
Photos.
Our farm.
Sarah and Preston.
One from their first summer together.
Robert had written file names.
PRESTON HELPS HAY.
PRESTON WITH SARAH ORCHARD.
PRESTON FIXES GATE.
No surveillance.
Family photos.
Robert had liked him enough to photograph.
Then final image:
Preston and Robert sitting on tractor tire.
Robert’s note:
Asked him directly if he wants land. He said no. I believed him today.
Today.
That word mattered.
People change under pressure.
Then Daniel received a new search return.
Preston had emailed Cassandra the morning of wedding.
If Lydia says no again, we stop.
Cassandra replied:
No. Tonight is the last chance.
Preston:
I mean it.
Cassandra:
Then stop being weak.
What happened between that message and the slap?
At 6:12 p.m., Cassandra sent Preston one photograph.
A lender default notice.
If farm option not delivered by Monday, Sterling Development’s $6.8 million loan would be called.
And beneath:
Your father’s company dies because you were afraid of an old woman.
Preston replied:

I’ll get the keys.
