Chapter 8 - CLAIRE WAS PART OF THEIR PLAN TOO

Claire found her name in the Keller storage files.
Folder:
CLAIRE.
I watched her face change as Detective Nolan opened it.
Employment records.
Mortgage information.
Divorce papers.
Therapy practice website.
Photos of her arriving at my house.
Then notes:
Emotionally reactive.
Protective of mother.
Likely obstacle.
Possible leverage:
Student loans.
Custody schedule.
Ex husband conflict.
Claire whispered:
“They investigated me.”
Yes.
Then a draft email.
From:
Mark.
To:
Claire.
Never sent.
Claire, Mom had another episode. She attacked me when I tried to help. We need to agree she cannot live alone.
That was supposed to be sent after the dog run incident.
Mark planned to reverse victim and aggressor.
Then another:
I found papers showing Mom changed insurance to favor you. I think that’s why you keep defending her.
That explained the policy copy.
It was supposed to divide us.
If Claire discovered she was primary beneficiary while I appeared confused, Mark could accuse her of manipulating me.
If Claire got angry that I hid the policy, even better.
Diane had placed a weapon between mother and daughter.
At the dog run, Claire’s instinctive reaction was exactly what they expected.
She backed away from both of us.
Then I smiled.
Not because I was sinister.
Because I recognized the trap.
“You were never supposed to open that page.”
Meaning:
Not there.
Not then.
Not from Mark’s packet.
But Claire heard something darker.
That misunderstanding lasted seconds.
Enough for video? yes.
In reality, I explained.
She listened.
Then cried.
“I thought you had some plan involving your death.”
“I have an estate plan. That is different.”
She laughed through tears.
Then Detective Nolan found another note.
If Claire sides with Evelyn, disclose 2019 loan.
Claire froze.
“What loan?”
I knew.
Six years earlier, Claire borrowed $75,000 from me after her divorce.
House down payment.
She repaid $40,000.
I forgave the balance later as part of annual gifts.
Properly documented.
Mark did not know.
Diane somehow did.
Estate binder.
They intended to portray Claire as financially dependent on me.
Conflict.
Then notes on Mark himself.
Diane had a folder on him too.
Debt.
Gambling? We don't want random unless needed. Could be business debts. Let's use IRS lien and investor lawsuit.
Mark owed:
$310,000 from failed logistics venture.
$92,000 tax liability.
$180,000 private note to Nathan Keller.
There.
Diane’s brother had lent him money.
Mark was financially tied to the Kellers.
Then a message:
NATHAN:
Get August vote done or I call the note.
MARK:
I’m handling Mom.
That was ugly.
Another:
NATHAN:
No violence. We need documents, not charges.
Important.
Nathan explicitly warned against violence.
Mark chose violence himself.
No one ordered him to pin me down.
That was his choice.
Then:
DIANE:
If Evelyn won’t sign, create enough instability that Claire supports temporary control.
Again.
They wanted confusion.
Not necessarily assault.
Mark escalated.
Then why did Diane flee?
Because the panic alarm exposed everything early.
The papers remained unfinished.
The conservatorship petition unfiled.
The acquisition vote not reached.
She likely feared charges over forgery and break in.
Then storage unit inventory found a prepaid phone.
Messages with unknown contact:
R.
R knew the board schedule.
R supplied Carter Components valuation.
R warned:
Evelyn is voting no.

Who inside my company was feeding them information?
That became the next problem.
