Union Federal Bank opened Box 318 the next morning.
I went with Sarah.
Detective Bennett attended because parts of the contents could relate to the abuse and possible financial fraud investigation.
The key fit.
Inside sat a red metal document box.
A flash drive.
Two sealed envelopes.
One photograph of Aaron holding Drew while Claire held newborn Lily.
I had not seen Claire’s face in years.
That nearly broke me.
Then the legal documents.
First:
Calder Children Property Trust.
Settlor:
Claire Mason Calder.
Trustee after Claire’s death:
Aaron Calder.
Successor corporate trustee:
North Star Fiduciary.
Beneficiaries:
Drew.
Lily.
Assets:
The family home.
Claire’s life insurance proceeds.
A medical settlement from Claire’s final hospitalization.
Investment accounts.
Reena was not trustee.
Not successor trustee.
Not beneficiary.
She was listed as:
Residential caretaker.
She could remain in the house with the children and receive $5,500 per month for household care.
That explained the economics.
The children had to remain in the residence.
If they permanently relocated or if Reena lost caregiver status, her stipend stopped.
Then an annual reimbursement allowance:
Up to $45,000 for verified child expenses.
Medical.
Education.
Childcare.
Therapy.
Not personal spending.
Current trust value according to Aaron’s last statement:
$2.84 million plus the house.
I stared.
“Why didn’t I know?”
Sarah pointed to the next document.

My chest tightened.

I confronted her once. She told me I had authorized broad household management and forgotten.
I do not believe that.

Me.

Anne Mercer.
Reena could petition only if both declined after direct verification.
I never declined.
Then the sealed envelope addressed:
PETER.
I opened.
Brother,
I owe you an apology.
Reena showed me messages that made me think you wanted nothing to do with the kids.
I was angry and ashamed, so I stopped trying.
Last week I checked my carrier records.
Several messages she showed me never passed through your number.
I think she created them.
My eyes blurred.
He knew before he died.
He had discovered the lie.
Then:
I was coming to see you Saturday.
Aaron died Friday morning.
One day.
We had been one day away from fixing it.
I put the letter down.
No one spoke.
The second envelope was addressed to North Star Fiduciary.
Inside:
Revoke all caretaker reimbursements to Reena upon evidence of child mistreatment, confinement, medical neglect, or interference with Peter’s guardian nomination.
That letter alone would not prove current abuse.
Drew’s leg and basement would.
Then the flash drive.
Password written inside the box:
BLUEPAINT.
Files.
Bank statements.
Emails.
Photos.
One folder:
REENA EXPENSES.
Aaron had already identified more than $180,000 of suspicious reimbursements.
Private speech therapy.
No provider record.
Special tutoring.
No school confirmation.
Emergency home repairs.
Repeated invoices from the same contractor.
Company:
Graybridge Family Services.
Address:
The same building as Nolan Gray’s law office.
Sarah leaned closer.
“That is not good.”
Then the final file.
House Sale Inquiry.
Reena had contacted a luxury brokerage before Aaron died.
She had asked how quickly the trust owned home could be sold if Aaron became unable to manage property.
He had found the email.
Reena had been researching control before his death.
That did not mean she caused his death.
