Chapter 2

Daniel knelt slightly so he was at eye level with the little girl.

"You really think that's it?"

Zuri nodded with complete confidence.

"My baby cousin cries when there are too many new people."

"She likes holding someone's finger."

Daniel glanced down at Lily.

Her tiny face was bright red from crying. Her little fists opened and closed helplessly beneath the cream cashmere blanket.

He looked toward Zuri's mother.

The woman offered an apologetic smile.

"If you're comfortable with it... she's very gentle."

Daniel hesitated for only a second.

Every trick he knew had failed.

"Okay."

Zuri carefully handed her plush rabbit to her mother.

Then she stepped closer with slow, deliberate movements, as though she instinctively understood babies could be startled.

She didn't try to take Lily.

She didn't crowd her.

She simply extended one tiny finger.

"Hi, baby."

Her voice was barely louder than a whisper.

"I'm Zuri."

Lily's cries continued for another few seconds.

Then something changed.

The baby's frantic movements slowed.

Her watery blue eyes shifted toward the little girl.

Without anyone encouraging her, Lily wrapped her tiny fingers around Zuri's finger.

The crying softened into quiet hiccups.

Daniel froze.

Emily, who had been walking toward them with another warmed bottle, stopped in the aisle.

The businessman across from them lowered his laptop.

An elderly couple removed their headphones.

The entire cabin seemed to hold its breath.

Zuri began humming a simple lullaby.

It wasn't polished.

It wasn't a famous song.

Just a soft, repetitive melody that sounded as though someone had sung it to her many times before.

Lily stared at her.

Another tiny hiccup.

Then...

Silence.

For the first time since takeoff, the cabin heard nothing except the steady hum of the engines.

Daniel looked down in disbelief.

His daughter was awake.

Calm.

Peaceful.

Still holding Zuri's finger as though she'd known her forever.

A tear escaped before he realized he was crying.

"How..." he whispered.

"How did you do that?"

Zuri looked up at him with innocent surprise.

"I didn't."

Daniel smiled through tears.

"You didn't?"

She shook her head.

"I just let her know she wasn't by herself."

The words hit him harder than he expected.

Because for six months...

He had been trying so hard to be both father and mother that he had forgotten one simple truth.

Sometimes comfort wasn't about fixing anything.

Sometimes it was simply about making someone feel safe.

Emily quietly dabbed at her own eyes before smiling.

"I've worked international flights for eight years," she said softly.

"I've never seen anything like this."

A few passengers began clapping.

Not loudly.

Just enough to acknowledge the extraordinary little moment they had all witnessed.

Zuri immediately looked embarrassed.

"I didn't do anything special."

Her mother laughed gently.

"You never think you do."

Daniel carefully settled back into his seat, still holding Lily.

The baby refused to let go of Zuri's finger.

When Zuri finally tried to step away, Lily frowned and gave a tiny whimper.

The entire row laughed.

"I think," Emily said with a grin, "you've just made your first best friend at thirty-seven thousand feet."

Everyone smiled.

May you like

For the first time all night, the flight no longer felt long.

It felt unforgettable.
