The notebook was black.
Cheap.
No lock.
The kind of object nobody would notice.
Robert Hale’s handwriting filled every page.
SARAH, AGE 13.
Grip endurance.
Pain tolerance poor.
Cries when pressure increases.
Needs discipline.
EMMA, AGE 9.
Avoidant.
Stops when uncomfortable.
Sarah must learn to control resistance.
Then the date of my first broken wrist.
EMMA QUIT DRILL. WRIST INJURY. LINDA PANICKED. MERCER INTERFERED.
No mention of falling.
No mention of Sarah causing it.
Dad documented his own involvement indirectly.
Next:
SARAH UPSET. EXPLAINED FAMILY CONSEQUENCES.
He taught her why lying was necessary.
Then age eleven neck injury.
SARAH HELD TOO LONG.
EMMA FAINT RESPONSE EXAGGERATED.
So Sarah did it.
Dad knew.
Next:
RIB DRILL FAILED.
SARAH HESITATED.
REPEAT LATER WHEN EMMA LESS EMOTIONAL.
My stomach turned.
He had planned to repeat the pillowcase drill.
Apparently never did.
Then years changed.
When Sarah was seventeen:
ROBERT NO LONGER DIRECTLY SUPERVISING.
Sarah initiated ankle sweep on Emma after argument.
Control poor.
He documented it.
Did he stop her?
No.
Next line:
Emma needs thicker skin.
Then Sarah eighteen:
Sibling conflict useful for Sarah mental toughness before nationals.
He began treating her independent aggression as beneficial.
By then Sarah was an adult.
Dad encouraged but did not control.
Then Sarah twenty:
EMMA crying after shoulder lock. Linda wants separation. Told Linda not to undermine Sarah confidence before trials.
Mom had tried, once.
Weakly.
Dad overruled.
She complied.
The log destroyed his claim he knew nothing.
It also destroyed Sarah’s claim everything was accidental.
The family had tracked injuries like training results.
Then money.
Several pages included:
TRUST REIMBURSEMENT.
MEDICAL.
EQUIPMENT.
Dad linked injuries to financial requests inside the same notebook.
Still no proof injuries were caused for money.
But proof he saw them as recoverable expenses.
One line after my age thirteen rib fracture:
Use rehab allocation to cover Sarah regional camp.
Explicit.
Then the prosecutor froze Hale Performance Athletics accounts subject to legal review.
The trust filed civil claims.
Dad’s business clients began leaving.
He called me.
I did not answer.
Then voicemail.
“You think Sarah is bad? You have no idea what your mother did.”
Another deflection.
But Mom’s conduct already looked terrible.
What else?
Detective Reyes asked Dad.
He claimed Linda was the person who invented most accident stories.
True.
She wrote many.
Then he said:
“She falsified Emma’s school records without me.”
Partly true.
Emails showed Mom handled school.
Dad handled training and money.
They divided the coverup.
Not one mastermind.
A partnership.
Then another section of the Resilience Log.
LINDA WANTS EMMA MOVED TO NATALIE.
REFUSED.
Why would Mom want me sent to Aunt Natalie?
I was eight.
Before first broken wrist.
I had forgotten.
Natalie remembered.
Mom called once crying.
Said Dad was becoming too intense with Sarah.
Asked if I could stay in Vermont for the summer.
Natalie said yes.
Dad refused.
Why?
“Family stays together.”
If Mom had followed through, maybe everything changed.
But she stayed.
Then the prosecutor asked Mom why.
Her answer:
“I was afraid Robert would take Sarah and leave me.”
There it was.
She chose keeping one child close over moving the other child to safety.
Then the financial auditor found a payment dated that same summer.
$25,000 transferred from Mom’s inheritance account into Hale Performance Athletics.
Dad’s first serious training business funding.
