Chapter 4 - The Cabinet Below Room 814

The service office had no public entrance.

Hotel plans showed a narrow door behind the laundry elevators, concealed by decorative paneling installed during the renovation.

Thomas used an old construction master key to open it.

The room smelled of dust and salt air. Metal shelves lined the walls. Rolled plans sat beneath plastic sheets. A disconnected security monitor faced a row of numbered cabinets.

814 stood near the back.

The hotel had no record of the cabinet system.

Daniel had installed it during the expansion.

Detective Morgan photographed the lock. The key inside Lily’s rabbit did not fit because the memory card was not a physical key.

The access phrase might unlock both the encrypted folder and the cabinet through an electronic pad hidden beneath the handle.

Only two attempts remained.

I stared at the small keypad.

Daniel had said I knew the phrase without knowing I knew it.

Thomas asked whether Daniel had ever described the hotel.

“He called it a beautiful building with dishonest bones.”

I entered the phrase.

BEAUTIFUL BUILDING.

Denied.

One attempt remained.

I stepped away.

Lena examined the photographs recovered from the card. One showed Daniel standing beside the hotel frame during construction. On the back of his safety vest, someone had written a sentence in black marker.

CHECK WHAT HOLDS THE WEIGHT.

Daniel said that often.

When business partners focused on glass walls and expensive finishes, he reminded them that a building survived because of the pieces nobody admired.

He said the same thing about families after my mother insulted him at our wedding.

Look at what holds the weight.

I entered it.

The cabinet opened.

Inside were original steel samples, signed inspection sheets, a small audio recorder, and a sealed envelope addressed to me.

The memory card folder unlocked at the same time.

Federal agents began cataloging the evidence.

The steel samples did not match the certified alloy. Laboratory tags proved Daniel had tested them independently.

The inspection sheets showed my father approved the counterfeit anchor plates after receiving a warning.

Mark’s company changed the shipment labels.

Helen witnessed the revised contract.

Vanessa signed an expense authorization moving the savings into Meridian Coast Holdings.

My sister had not been an innocent relative enjoying money she did not understand.

She approved the transfers.

The audio recorder contained Daniel’s confrontation with Robert.

“You are placing people above forty floors on metal that can crack under half the required load,” Daniel said.

My father answered, “The manufacturer’s liability covers failure.”

“Liability does not keep people alive.”

“No project is risk free.”

“This is not risk. This is fraud.”

Then Robert lowered his voice.

“Claire finally has a stable life. Do not make her choose between her husband and her family.”

Daniel replied, “She already chose the moment she stopped letting you control her.”

A chair moved.

My father said, “Lily still carries that rabbit everywhere, does she not?”

The recording ended.

The threat had been indirect enough to deny.

Clear enough for Daniel to understand.

I opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a copy of Daniel’s will amendment. It transferred his shares in Bennett Forensic Engineering to a trust for Lily.

The company had developed a proprietary structural monitoring system. After Daniel died, Mark claimed the software belonged to Meridian Coast because Daniel created it during contract work.

I did not fight the claim.

The amendment proved otherwise.

Lily owned the system.

Its patents were now worth more than one hundred million dollars because several cities used the technology through licensing agreements.

My family needed access to Lily for more than the memory card.

They needed guardianship over the patent trust.

The incident report prepared before the hallway had accused me of abandonment.

The room search targeted the rabbit.

The false hotel charges made me appear financially reckless.

The entire vacation had been built to produce a custody case.

Agent Pierce received another report from my bank.

Three weeks earlier, someone attempted to borrow twelve million dollars against Lily’s patent trust.

The application used my electronic signature.

The loan beneficiary was Meridian Coast Holdings.

The guarantor was Vanessa.

The bank rejected it because the trust required independent confirmation from Daniel’s original attorney.

That attorney disappeared five days later.

Continue to the next part: Claire learns the lawyer protecting Lily’s inheritance vanished just before the family vacation began.
