Chapter 18 - MY SISTER’S LAST BARGAIN

Marissa had disappeared from her supervised residence forty minutes before the trust session.

The officer assigned to the property had been found unconscious inside a service room.

Pike entered using legal credentials issued before his suspension.

He had prepared escape routes inside every institution that once treated him as respectable.

On the lower chamber feed, Marissa stood beside the archive destruction control.

Her face was bruised near one temple.

Her voice remained clear.

“Do not seal it.”

Charlotte stared at her.

Pike tightened his hand around Marissa’s arm.

“You have spent ten years grieving this child. Think carefully.”

Marissa looked directly into the camera.

“I spent ten years grieving because I accepted the easiest lie.”

Diane began crying through the legal observation feed.

Marissa ignored her.

“I blamed Emily because she had the life I thought I deserved. I blamed Mom because she controlled everything. I blamed Dad because he kept secrets. I blamed Pike because he used me.”

Her eyes met mine through the camera.

“All of that was true.”

Then she placed one hand over the marks left by the cable.

“But I kicked my pregnant sister.”

The room became still.

“No one forced my foot to move.”

Pike pulled her backward.

“Stop talking.”

Marissa continued.

“I knew he wanted a hospital event. I told myself I would only frighten Emily. I knew there was a baby inside her, and I did it anyway.”

Charlotte’s lips trembled.

“Why?”

“Because Pike told me your identity would disappear if Emily’s child was born first.”

“That was a lie.”

“Yes.”

“You believed him?”

“I believed the lie that made my jealousy feel like love.”

Pike reached for the archive destruction switch.

The technician warned that the lower chamber contained no simple delete command. The switch would trigger thermal destruction of the physical backup drives.

The distributed files would remain outside the house.

The final proof against Warren Mercer could be lost.

Charlotte looked at the restitution option.

Then at Marissa.

“I do not know you.”

“I know.”

“I do not forgive you.”

“I know.”

“I wanted you to be different from what Lucas said.”

Marissa’s face broke.

“I wanted that too.”

Pike shouted toward the camera.

“Choose.”

Charlotte pressed the independent restitution option.

The archive accepted her decision.

Pike slammed the destruction switch.

Nothing happened.

Thomas’s recording returned.

“Coercion invalidates control.”

Pike stared at the console.

The switch had been disabled the moment Marissa entered under restraint.

The trust had recorded every threat.

A concealed chamber door opened behind him.

The inspector general and two federal officers entered.

Pike released Marissa and ran toward the tunnel.

Marissa stepped into his path.

He struck her shoulder and tried to pass.

She held the tunnel gate long enough for officers to reach him.

No dramatic battle followed.

No final speech.

Martin Pike was forced to the floor inside the archive he had spent years trying to erase.

Marissa sat against the wall, breathing hard.

Charlotte did not run to her.

She remained beside the newborn and watched.

The restitution board received the complete archive.

The original drive linked Warren Mercer to every stage of the identity network.

Payments.

Access orders.

Hospital agreements.

Courthouse leaks.

High Summit transfers.

One final communication showed Warren instructing Lucas to create conflict between the two Charlottes.

ONLY ONE HEIR MUST APPEAR LEGITIMATE. THE OTHER BECOMES THE THREAT.

That was the entire system.

Choose one victim.

Give her someone weaker to blame.

Let fear perform the work power no longer wished to do openly.

Marissa was taken to the hospital before returning to custody.

She asked to speak with me.

I entered her room carrying no baby.

Preston remained outside.

“I am going to plead guilty,” she said.

“To what?”

“The assault. The forged documents. The conspiracy.”

“Your attorney may advise against admitting everything.”

“My attorney has spent years turning my choices into explanations.”

She looked toward the window.

“I need consequences that do not depend on whether I cry convincingly.”

I sat across from her.

“Charlotte may never call you her mother.”

“I know.”

“She may choose no contact.”

“I know.”

“I may never forgive you.”

Marissa nodded.

“I did not ask you here for forgiveness.”

“Then why?”

“To tell you Mom knew more.”

I became still.

“More about what?”

“The birthday party.”

Marissa explained that Diane had invited exactly forty relatives because Pike needed enough witnesses to create conflicting accounts.

Some would remember Marissa slipping.

Some would remember me provoking her.

Some would remember no kick at all.

Diane arranged the room so the main camera faced away from us.

She placed the property papers inside Marissa’s purse before the guests arrived.

“She planned for the documents to fall,” Marissa said.

“Why?”

“To make Preston focus on the property conspiracy instead of the hospital verification.”

Diane had not merely failed to stop the attack.

She had designed the distraction around it.

“Did she know you would kick me?”

Marissa closed her eyes.

“She told me one hard shove could save Charlotte’s inheritance.”

The woman who claimed not to know had provided the sentence my sister used to justify violence.

Before I could leave, Marissa added one final truth.

“Mom was not protecting Pike.”

“Who was she protecting?”

“Warren Mercer.”

Diane had met him before marrying our father.

High Summit had not entered the Bennett family through Marissa.

May you like

It had entered through our mother.

Continue to the next part: Diane’s connection to Warren Mercer reveals that the conspiracy began before Emily and Marissa were born.
