Chapter 6 - THE FOUNDER’S RING

Thomas called me from Clara’s phone.
“Bring Arthur’s ring to the old grain terminal.”
“Let Clara speak.”
“You still give orders like the room belongs to you.”
“What do you want with the ring?”
“The federal resilience account requires all three Bennett founder seals.”
“Ethan’s ring is already yours.”
“Yes.”
“Mine?”
“You never owned one.”
I looked toward Arthur.
He removed the chain beneath his shirt.
Two rings hung from it.
His own.
And mine.
Dad had kept the third founder ring since I was a child.
“Why?” I asked.
“I never wanted Heartland to reach you.”
“But it used my name anyway.”
His protection had been another silence.
Thomas continued through the phone.
“Bring both rings. Clara returns alive.”
Detective Jennings arranged surveillance around the grain terminal.
I agreed to wear a recording device.
Arthur asked to come.
“No.”
“The ring belongs to my mistake.”
“The danger does not.”
He looked toward the floor.
“You sound like your mother.”
I met Thomas inside the abandoned loading hall.
Clara sat in a chair near the grain scales. Her hands were tied, but she appeared conscious.
Thomas stood behind her wearing Ethan’s ring.
The resemblance between us was unsettling.
Same dark hair.
Same height.
Same Bennett eyes.
He had spent years becoming the version of me local people expected.
“You look disappointed,” he said.
“I expected a reason.”
“I have several.”
He claimed Arthur and Raymond stole his mother’s farm when he was young.
The first Heartland transfer had not involved Rose.
It involved Thomas’s mother, Margaret Bennett.
Arthur promised the land would remain in the family.
Raymond sold the mineral rights.
Margaret died believing her cousins betrayed her.
Thomas spent his adulthood collecting proof.
“Then why help Pike steal more farms?”
“Because revenge requires access.”
“You became the thing you claimed to hate.”
“I became the person allowed into the room.”
Thomas planned to take the federal resilience funds and distribute them among owners whose families lost land through old Heartland agreements.
Clara looked toward him.
“He is lying.”
Thomas tightened his jaw.
She had seen the offshore accounts.
The money would not reach victims.
It would create another land company controlled by Thomas.
He did not want justice.
He wanted succession.
I held up the rings.
“Release her.
.”
“Place them on the scale.”
I obeyed.
Thomas stepped forward.
Clara kicked the back of his knee.
He fell against the grain platform.
Detective Jennings and state officers entered.
Thomas grabbed Clara and held a knife near her throat.
“You think Arthur is innocent now because he looks old?”
“No.”
“You think Ethan becomes clean because Jessica chained him?”
“No.”
His expression shifted.
He had prepared for denial.
He had not prepared for accountability without surrender.
“My father helped create Heartland,” I said. “Ethan maintained it. I ignored what my money supported. None of that gives you Clara.”
His grip loosened for one second.
The officers moved.
Clara dropped to the floor.
Thomas was arrested.
The rings remained on the grain scale.
Inside his jacket, investigators found the original portfolio sale agreement.
Raymond Pike’s signature appeared beneath every transfer.
So did Susan’s.
Wade’s.
Sheriff Grady’s.
And Arthur’s.
Dad had signed it four months earlier.
I confronted him at the hospital.
“I refused the final certificate,” he said.
“You signed the sale.”
“Raymond told me it would move the farms into independent protection.”
“You believed him after Rose?”
“No.”
“Then why sign?”
“He had Ethan.”
Ethan looked toward Dad.
“I was not chained yet.”
“But Jessica had your medical records. She said she could send you away permanently.”
Arthur had chosen the document he believed might buy time.
It also gave Raymond enough authority to prepare the sale.
Fear explained his signature.
It did not remove it.
The prosecutor informed us that Arthur could face charges.
Dad nodded.
“I should.”
Mom began crying.
I did not tell her everything would be fine.
It would not.
It could become truthful.
Raymond Pike was arrested that evening while attempting to leave Ohio in a private aircraft.
Susan was found inside the same plane carrying cash, altered deeds, and a list of one hundred seventeen farm addresses across five states.
The twenty nine Ohio properties were only one portfolio.
At the top of the list appeared another name.
HARVEST CONTINUITY NETWORK.
Beneath it was a title.
NATIONAL DIRECTOR: ROSE BENNETT.
My missing aunt had not vanished inside Heartland.

She was running the organization above it.
Continue to the next part: Arthur must explain why the sister he claimed was a victim appears to control more than one hundred stolen farms.
