Chapter 22 - The Father Meadow Chose

At twenty-one, Meadow began seeing Dennis for lunch every few months.
Not because I encouraged.
Not because Dennis demanded.
She chose.
They met in public.
Sometimes Patricia joined.
Sometimes not.
Dennis never entered our home.
There was no reason.
He had remarried? Maybe too much. Let's consider. Could complicate. Better he did not remarry yet. He dated cautiously, no need.
Then one afternoon Meadow called me from Lincoln.
“Dad had a panic attack.”
My body tightened.
“What happened?”
“We talked about stairs.”
“Are you safe?”
“Yes.”
“What do you need?”
“Nothing.”
Good.
Then:
“He said he still dreams about me falling.”
I stayed quiet.
“Do you feel sorry for him?”
“Yes.”
“That’s allowed.”
“Does it mean I’m betraying myself?”
“No.”
She exhaled.
Then:
“I think I forgive him.”
I closed eyes.
“How does that feel?”
“Sad.”
Interesting.
Then:
“I thought forgiveness would feel like winning.”
“No.”
“What does it feel like for you?”
“Less crowded.”
She laughed.
“That's very Mom.”
Then:
“I don't want him to be my parent again.”
I understood.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s my father.”
Then:
“But I don't want him telling me what to do, giving me money with strings, acting like we can make up for childhood.”
“Have you told him?”
“Yes.”
“What did he say?”
“Okay.”
There it was.
Dennis learned no.
Too late.
Still.
Then Meadow asked him one thing.
“Would you come to my college graduation?”
He said yes.
No demands about seating.
At graduation, Serena did not attend.
Patricia and Alan did.
Dennis sat behind.
I sat with Naomi from clinic and Peter? Wait Victoria never had partner in this story. We haven't introduced one. Keep Victoria single maybe. Fine. Could introduce later but not necessary. Let's keep single, strong not anti-romance. So Victoria, Patricia/Alan.
Meadow graduated with wildlife biology degree.
She accepted a job with Nebraska Game and Parks doing habitat restoration.
Not clinic.
Her own path.
After ceremony she took photographs.
One with me.
One with Dennis.
One with grandparents.
No forced group photo.
Then she surprised us.
“Mom. Dad. One together.”
I looked at Dennis.
He looked at me.
We stood on either side of Meadow.
No touch.
Photo.
Truthful.
Three people connected.
Not restored marriage.
Then Meadow said:
“Serena wants to send me something.”
“What?”
“Grandma’s recipe book.”
Our mother’s.
Serena had inherited it after parents died.
Meadow wanted.
“Then accept.”
“Does that mean anything?”
“It means she sent a recipe book.”
Meadow smiled.
She accepted.
No hidden obligation.
Then Serena and Meadow exchanged occasional emails.
No visits.
No aunt-niece holidays yet.
Distance.
Then Dennis finished all supervision.
Restitution? There were medical costs maybe. Court ordered restitution for uncovered medical/therapy costs to extent legal. He paid over years through wages. Eventually satisfied.
He sent me notice through attorney:
Restitution complete.
I replied:
Received.
No conversation.
Then he petitioned nothing.
No custody; Meadow adult.
Legal relationship done.
Criminal supervision completed.
No open case.
That felt important.
Then I sold Prairie Ridge? Not yet.
I stepped back from overnight emergency calls as I approached fifty.
Naomi teased.
I hired younger vet.
Meadow joked:
“Maybe Dad was right. You were never home.”
I stared.
She grinned.
“Too soon?”
“Ten years and still too soon.”
We laughed.
May you like
That laughter did not erase.
It reclaimed.
