Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Called It a Mistake

Emma stared at her mother.
“One mistake?”
Her mother folded her arms.
“Sabrina panicked.”
“She drugged my daughter.”
“She did not mean for Harper to collapse.”
“Then what did she mean to happen?”
The older woman looked away.
That movement answered more than words.
Emma stepped closer.
“You knew.”
“I knew she wanted to prove you were careless.”
“She used prescription medication.”
“She told me it would only make Harper sleepy.”
Nolan stood beside Emma.
His face became cold.
“You knew a child would be given medication and you said nothing.”
“I thought Sabrina understood the dose.”
Emma felt rage rising.
“She is not a doctor.”
“She researched it.”
“You helped her.”
Her mother began crying.
“I was trying to save both my daughters.”
“No.”
Emma’s voice became steady.
“You chose Sabrina.”
The same pattern had shaped their childhood.
Sabrina caused trouble.
Emma was asked to forgive.
Sabrina lied.
Emma was told not to create conflict.
Sabrina needed money.
Emma was expected to help.
Their mother called it keeping the family together.
In reality, she taught Sabrina that someone else would always absorb the consequences.
“Why guardianship?” Nolan asked.
Their mother wiped her face.
“Sabrina lost everything.”
“So she tried to take our child?”
“She wanted somewhere to stay.”
Emma stared at her.
“She could have asked.”
“She knew you would say no.”
“Because she has been lying to us for years.”
Their mother’s expression hardened.
“You always had more.”
Emma almost laughed.
“There it is.”

More attention.
More stability.
A husband.
A child.
To Sabrina, Emma’s life had become something unfairly distributed.
Something she deserved permission to take.
Police interviewed their mother.
She admitted sharing the cabinet code after finding it in Emma’s emergency note.
She admitted telling Sabrina the kitchen camera no longer worked.
She admitted helping spread concerns about Emma’s mental state.
She denied knowing the exact plan.
The messages contradicted her.
One message from Sabrina read:
After the party, support the emergency guardianship. Nolan will be too shocked to fight both of us.
Her mother replied:
I will handle the family.
Both women were charged.
Sabrina faced serious charges connected to poisoning, child endangerment, fraud, and attempted custodial interference.
Their mother faced conspiracy and failure to protect.
Emma sat beside Harper’s hospital bed after police left.
Harper was coloring a unicorn with purple crayons.
“Is Aunt Sabrina coming back?”
“No.”
“Is Grandma?”
“Not for a long time.”
Harper looked sad.
“Did I do something?”
Emma put down the crayon.
“You did nothing.”
“Why did they give me the bad drink?”
Emma struggled to answer without placing an adult burden on a child.
“Because they made unsafe choices.”
“Did Aunt Sabrina want to be my mom?”
Emma felt tears rise.
“She wanted control over things that did not belong to her.”
Harper looked confused.
“I belong to me.”
Emma smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
“You and Dad take care of me, but I belong to me.”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
That sentence became Emma’s anchor.
Harper was not a prize.
Not an inheritance path.
Not a cure for Sabrina’s failures.
She was a child.
Nolan arranged for the house security to be replaced.
Every lock changed.
Every code reset.
The medicine cabinet moved into a secure room.
The birthday decorations remained untouched for several days.
Neither Emma nor Nolan could bring themselves to remove them.
The unicorn cake still sat inside the refrigerator.
One evening, after Harper returned home, she asked whether she could finish her birthday.
Emma hesitated.
“What do you mean?”
“I never blew out my candles.”
So they created another celebration.
No extended family.
No large guest list.
Only Emma, Nolan, Harper, and two trusted friends.
They placed seven candles on a smaller cake.
Harper closed her eyes.
“What did you wish for?” Nolan asked.
She smiled.
“You cannot tell or it will not happen.”
Emma watched her daughter laugh.
Hope returned quietly.
Then Nolan received a message from Detective Collins.
Police had recovered deleted footage from an older camera near the bedroom hallway.
The video showed Sabrina entering the room.
But someone else opened the bedroom door for her.
A man wearing a catering uniform.
Emma recognized him.
He was Sabrina’s former boyfriend.
