Chapter 21 - Jonathan’s Grave

I visited Jonathan’s grave alone.
First time in years.
I brought nothing.
No flowers.
No speech prepared.
His stone:
JONATHAN CHARLES MERCER
BELOVED FATHER, BROTHER, SON
True.
Also incomplete.
I stood.
“You lied to me.”
Wind.
Nothing.
“You let Diane go to prison because you were afraid.”
Nothing.
“You tried to fix it.”
Still nothing.
“I loved you.”
That hurt most.
I had spent years thinking love required choosing a final verdict on him.
Good brother or bad.
He was both.
He manipulated my fertility results for money and control.
He failed Diane.
He protected Caleb too long.
Then he tried to expose him.
He left records.
He confessed.
He died before repairing damage.
No clean ending.
I said:
“I’m not naming Noah after you.”
I almost laughed.
That had mattered once.
Then:
“But I will tell him you existed.”
I left.
No forgiveness ceremony.
No ghost.
Just grave.
Clara asked later:
“Better?”
May you like
“Different.”
Good enough.
