Chapter 5 - The Delivery Nobody Could Control

Emergency lights illuminated only the lower walls.

The monitors switched to battery power, but the electronic locks failed.

Julian struck the officer beside him and disappeared through the service stairwell.

His second officer fired a warning shot into the ceiling.

Panic spread across the maternity floor.

Dr. Lane did not look away from Chloe’s fetal monitor.

“The baby needs to come out.”

Chloe shook her head violently.

“No.”

“A C section is not the only option. The baby is low enough that we may be able to deliver in a secure room.”

“What if something goes wrong?”

“Then I tell you the truth before making a decision.”

That promise mattered more than any medical title.

We moved Chloe into an older birthing suite disconnected from Julian’s automated system. Police searched every member of the team. Supplies came from sealed emergency cabinets. Dr. Lane selected two nurses who had previously reported Julian’s misconduct.

Chloe wanted me beside her.

I changed into protective clothing and remained near her head.

The contractions came quickly.

Julian’s injection had forced her body into labor before it was ready. Chloe cried out as pain moved through her bruised ribs.

“I cannot do this.”

“Yes, you can.”

“He will take the baby.”

“No one will.”

“You do not know that.”

She was right.

I had spent the day revealing ownership papers and emergency powers, but Julian had spent years building loyalty inside the building.

We did not know who freed him.

The fetal heartbeat weakened again.

Dr. Lane gave Chloe clear choices. She could continue briefly while the team attempted assisted delivery, or she could consent to surgery in the secure suite with independent anesthesia.

Chloe chose to continue.

For twenty minutes, she pushed while the hospital searched for her husband.

Then a nurse entered carrying blood for possible transfusion.

Emma Reed.

She had worked at Saint Catherine for seventeen years.

I recognized her as one of the board employees who opposed Julian’s suspension.

Detective Morgan checked the blood bag.

The identification matched Chloe.

The type did not.

AB negative.

Natalie Pierce’s blood type.

The same false sample in Chloe’s chart.

Emma tried to leave.

Police stopped her.

Inside her pocket was Julian’s handcuff key.

She had freed him.

Emma confessed only after Morgan showed her the vial Adrian carried. Julian had promised to appoint her chief nursing officer if she helped preserve the midnight protocol.

She disabled the generator and released him through the stairwell.

“Where did he go?”

Emma looked toward the basement.

“The Haven room.”

No Haven room appeared on any official map.

Thomas’s old construction records revealed a sealed suite beneath the neonatal wing. It had been created for private patent trials before Whitehaven purchased the hospital.

Julian had hidden there.

With the original research servers.

Chloe screamed through another contraction.

The baby’s head appeared.

Dr. Lane guided her carefully.

For one breathless minute, the room contained only Chloe’s effort and the calm instructions of people she had chosen.

Then her daughter was born.

The baby did not cry.

Dr. Lane placed the newborn beneath the warming lights. A neonatal nurse began ventilation.

Chloe reached toward her.

“Why is she not crying?”

The nurse continued working.

Seconds became unbearable.

Then a small sound filled the room.

Weak.

Angry.

Alive.

Chloe sobbed.

I pressed my forehead against hers.

“You did it.”

The baby was placed briefly against her chest.

She had dark hair and a small crease between her brows.

Julian had called her an inheritance.

At that moment, she was only a child trying to breathe.

The newborn’s hospital bracelet printed automatically.

No one had entered a name yet.

The bracelet displayed:

BABY THORNE, EMERGENCY TRUST SUBJECT H 13.

Dr. Lane froze.

“What is H 13?”

Evelyn accessed the isolated trust files.

Project Haven listed twelve previous fetal subjects.

H 01 through H 12.

Three had died.

Five developed neurological complications.

Four were marked transferred.

Chloe’s baby was H 13.

Julian had enrolled her before birth.

The monitor above the warming station activated without anyone touching it.

A live video showed Julian inside the hidden Haven room.

Behind him stood a silver haired man in a surgical mask.

Julian removed his own mask.

“The child belongs to the protocol.”

Chloe clutched the newborn tighter.

I recognized the older man’s eyes.

Thomas.

My dead husband stood beside Julian.

Continue to the next part: Margaret sees the husband she buried alive inside the secret research room while Julian claims Chloe’s baby belongs to Project Haven.
