Chapter 23 - The Last Time Emily Heard His Voice

Daniel died at sixty eight.
Heart attack.
Years after supervision ended.
Emily learned through Lauren, who saw obituary.
No victim notification anymore.
No legal relationship.
She sat with information.
Ben asked:
“Do you want funeral?”
“No.”
“Do you feel anything?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“Relief. Sadness. Anger. Nothing.”
All.
Daniel never remarried.
He had a long-term partner late who knew conviction.
No new reported violence.
That did not prove complete redemption.
It meant no new known cases.
His estate was small.
He left no money Emily.
Good.
One letter held by attorney for Emily if she wanted.
She almost declined.
Then accepted.
It was dated two years before death.
Emily,
I do not expect this to reach you unless I die.
I am sorry for making my death another reason you have to think about me.
Then:
The most dangerous lie I told was not that you fell.
It was that your fear made you unreliable.
Then:
You had anxiety and I used that fact as permission to decide which symptoms were real. Eventually I used it to hide a danger I created.
Then:
I wanted control more than I wanted you safe.
Then:
The money mattered. The insurance mattered. The divorce mattered. But none of those explain why I believed I was entitled to make your choices. That started before the cast.
Then:
I am sorry.
No request.
Emily read once.
Then called Lauren.
“Do you want hear?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She shredded after week.
Why?
“His last words don't need live longer than him.”
Then Daniel estate closed.
No hidden account.
No industrial supply.
No extra victims.
His old company long sold.
No unfinished criminal thread.
Then his partner sent message through attorney:
He never spoke badly about you in later years.
Emily replied:
Thank you. I wish you peace.
Nothing else.
Then she went to work.
Normal.
That evening Ben asked:
“Are you okay?”
She said:
“I’m going to be.”
No dramatic.
Then later she told me by email.
Subject:
May you like
The last voice stopped.
I understood.
