Chapter 7 - Melissa’s Email

Melissa did not deny sending it.

She denied understanding it.

Her email:

KENNETH,

PER YOUR REQUEST, REED ITEMS ARE CLOSED FOR CURRENT CERTIFICATION. LENA WILL COMPLETE BACK END FILE NOTES NEXT WEEK.

THANKS,

MELISSA

Sent Friday at 4:38 p.m.

Two days before the birthday.

Three days before the crash.

Lena had never authorized that message.

Dad had not either.

“Why did you send it?”

Melissa sat across from me with her lawyer.

“Kenneth called.”

“And told you what?”

“That Dad had signed the report and they needed confirmation.”

“So you wrote Reed items are closed.”

“He gave me the wording.”

“Did you ask Lena?”

“No.”

“Dad?”

“He was in a meeting.”

“Why not wait?”

“Because Brandon was taking me to dinner.”

I stared.

“That is your answer?”

“I was working late.”

“Melissa.”

“I thought it was administrative.”

“What did Kenneth say exactly?”

She closed her eyes.

“That the insurance file would not close while Reed showed open.”

“So you helped close it.”

“I sent an email.”

“That helped close it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Travis had four exceptions?”

“No.”

“Did you know Ethan had called Dad about Arrow Ridge?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was worried?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Brandon?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

“What did Brandon say?”

“That his dad handled operations and Ethan should stay out of it.”

“Did Brandon tell Kenneth Ethan was asking questions?”

“I don’t know.”

Phone records later showed Brandon called Kenneth eleven minutes after talking to Melissa.

Probably.

Then I asked:

“Why didn’t you come to the funeral?”

Melissa’s face twisted.

“I couldn’t.”

“You could.”

“No.”

“You were at a restaurant.”

“I mean emotionally.”

I almost laughed.

She continued.

“Brandon’s father was there.”

“I know.”

“Brandon had planned the proposal for months.”

“My children had been dead six days.”

She started crying.

“I know.”

“No, you knew the fact. I don’t think you knew what it meant.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Neither were three empty chairs.”

Silence.

Then Melissa said:

“Dad told us if we went, reporters might connect the families.”

There.

Again.

Image.

Protection.

Brandon’s father.

My father.

Her engagement.

They chose containment.

Then she said something new.

“Kenneth did not come because of my birthday.”

“What?”

“He came because Dad asked him to.”

Dad had told me Kenneth was already there.

“Why?”

“To discuss the accident.”

At Melissa’s birthday.

The same day as funeral.

“What did they discuss?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“They went into private room.”

“How long?”

“Maybe forty minutes.”

“Who else?”

“Brandon.”

“And?”

“My mother.”

Mother had not mentioned joining.

Then:

“A lawyer.”

“Whose lawyer?”

“Kenneth’s.”

Name?

Melissa did not remember.

Aunt Ruth’s photographs showed a bald man leaving the dining room with Dad and Kenneth at 8:17.

Andrew identified him later.

Charles Voss.

Outside counsel for Arrow Ridge.

The same attorney who negotiated portions of the settlement.

That was not automatically improper.

Defense counsel can meet clients anywhere.

But why was my family part of the meeting?

Dad as consultant.

Kenneth as executive.

Melissa as sender of clearance email.

Mother because she had altered duplicate file.

Brandon because son.

They were not celebrating only.

They were managing exposure while I buried the victims.

Then Melissa looked at me.

“You think we were plotting.”

“I think you chose yourselves.”

That was enough.

Then her lawyer handed Mara a document voluntarily.

Melissa had saved Kenneth’s original instruction.

Text:

Need Reed closed for Friday package. Richard signed clean. Send client confirmation from Bennett account and I will fix supporting notes Sunday.

Melissa:

Lena?

Kenneth:

Not needed for client email.

There.

Kenneth bypassed analyst.

Melissa followed.

Then Sunday.

Kenneth never fixed notes.

Instead:

Dispatch records show Travis assigned Richmond route.

At 10:12 p.m. Sunday, driver logged only four hours rest after prior shift.

System should have blocked.

It did not.

Why?

Manual override.

User:

KSLOAN ADMIN.

Kenneth.

His account.

He denied personally doing it.

Operations admin staff had shared access? Supposedly.

Then one more login.

At 10:18 p.m.:

BRANDON.S

Brandon Sloan.

My sister’s fiancé.

He worked for Sloan Logistics, not Arrow Ridge.

Why did he have Arrow Ridge system access?

Temporary consultant credentials through his father.

Task:

Dispatch optimization.

He had opened Travis Reed’s route.

No edit recorded.

Only viewed.

I looked at Melissa.

“Did Brandon know Travis was driving Monday?”

She whispered:

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He told me Dad’s driver problem had been fixed.”

“Dad’s driver problem.”

She nodded.

Then:

“He said after Monday we could stop hearing about it.”

Monday came.

May you like

Ethan, Lily, and Noah died.

Continue to the next part: Melissa’s fiancé had access to Arrow Ridge’s dispatch system the night before the crash and viewed Travis Reed’s route after Kenneth’s account overrode the driver’s rest warning.
