Chapter 20 - Frank’s Final Answer

Frank was eighty when he asked to speak with Lily alone.

She was twenty six.

Adult.

No permission from me required.

Still, she told.

“Okay?”

“It’s yours.”

She met him at café.

Later she told me.

Frank said:

“I have one question I think I avoided.”

Lily:

“What?”

“Do you think I hurt you?”

She stared.

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Not defensive.

Then:

“Even though I didn’t hit?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You watched.”

Then:

“You helped lie.”

Then:

“You kept taking pictures while I cried.”

Then:

“You tried to make Mom partly guilty.”

Frank looked down.

“I agree.”

Then:

“I spent years thinking my crime was not stopping Diane.”

Lily said:

“That’s part.”

“What rest?”

“You were doing something too.”

There.

Not passive.

Creating fake.

Documenting.

Covering.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Lily:

“I know.”

Then he asked:

“Do you forgive?”

She took time.

“Yes.”

Frank cried.

Then:

“Does that mean I get anything?”

“No.”

He laughed.

“Good answer.”

Then Lily said:

“You get coffee.”

They finished.

That was final major conversation.

Frank’s health declined two years later.

Cancer returned, spread.

No sudden.

He had time.

He sent estate overview to Amanda? He had daughters by relationship: Rachel and Amanda biological? Frank is adoptive father to Rachel, biological to Amanda. Equal shares? This story established Diane/Frank as parents of Rachel and Amanda. He chose equal estate split between both daughters.

No hidden conditions.

No money twist.

He asked each whether they wanted items.

Rachel chose old fishing tackle? Maybe memory.

I chose wooden toolbox he used when teaching me repairs.

Amanda chose family china.

Lily chose nothing.

Fine.

Then hospital.

I visited.

“Dad.”

He smiled.

“Still.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Do you regret calling 911?”

He asked?

I laughed.

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“I regret making you think outside help was betrayal.”

That was his last meaningful apology.

Then:

“I spent marriage protecting image of family from family.”

There.

Then:

“You broke it.”

“Sounds flattering.”

“It is.”

He died weeks later at eighty two.

Natural cancer complications.

No secret recording.

No new confession.

No hidden will.

At funeral, Diane attended.

They had been divorced more than a decade.

She sat with Amanda, not widow front? She was ex wife. Fine.

She cried.

They had loved once.

At grave, Lily stood beside me.

She placed no camera.

Then after, Diane said:

“He became better.”

I answered:

“So did you.”

She cried harder.

Then Frank estate.

Equal shares.

No contest.

I received modest amount around $120,000 after costs.

I did not need.

Accepted.

Used part for retirement, part to fund child advocacy photography project Lily supported? Could be. Better no performative donation requirement. I kept most. I donated a small portion to legal aid because I wanted.

Then Lily inherited from Frank directly? He left $20k each granddaughter maybe equal to Madison. No conditions.

Lily used on studio equipment after asking financial advisor.

The man whose phone once harmed her indirectly funded camera she chose.

Was that poetic? Maybe too neat, but plausible. Lily said:

“Is this weird?”

“Yes.”

“Do I keep?”

“Your choice.”

She did.

Then put tiny sticker inside case:

ASK FIRST.

No one else knew.

Then Diane health declined.

She was eighty one.

Heart failure.

No cancer. She moved assisted living.

She asked before photos.

Even staff.

Habit changed.

Then one day she told Lily:

“I’m proud of your work.”

Lily:

“Because pictures good?”

Diane smiled.

“Because people look like themselves.”

Perfect.

Then:

“Do you think I ruined your childhood?”

“No.”

Diane surprised.

“You ruined one birthday.”

Then:

“And made some years harder.”

Then:

“But childhood bigger.”

Diane cried.

No absolution.

May you like

Perspective.

Continue to the next part: Lily finally tells Frank that watching, photographing, lying, and covering up were active choices too, and he accepts the answer without asking her to soften it.
