Chapter 8 - What Julian Knew About Matthew

The full recording came from Dr. Vale’s office.
Police recovered it after seizing the physician’s server. Graham released only the final sentence because the earlier conversation changed its meaning.
Julian sat across from Dr. Vale with a folder on his lap.
“You used Matthew’s medical appointment to collect Clara’s biometric profile.”
Vale denied it.
Julian placed a report on the desk.
The family physician had copied voice recordings, facial scans, and signature data from routine forms completed during Matthew’s childhood visits.
Eleanor requested the appointments.
Graham paid for the data.
Julian had discovered the collection three weeks before his death.
He believed Graham wanted my founder authorization.
He did not know about the future custody plan, but he knew our son had become part of the pressure.
“If anything happens to me,” Julian said, “Clara cannot know the child was involved until the archive is safe.”
He was not calling Matthew a conspirator.
He was protecting him from knowledge that could make him a target.
Julian gave Dr. Vale one opportunity to cooperate.
Vale pretended to agree.
Then he called Graham.
The next recovered recording captured their conversation.
“Julian knows about the medical profiles,” Vale said.
Graham answered, “Then the road problem must happen before he speaks.”
Detective Monroe played the line three times.
The road problem.
Julian’s car left the highway during a storm after the steering system failed.
The original investigation found no mechanical defect because the vehicle was badly damaged.
Halcyon engineers reopened the data from its onboard computer.
A remote maintenance command entered twenty minutes before the crash.
The command used credentials belonging to Whitmore Holdings.
My family’s company.
Eleanor had no technical ability to access a car.
Graham did.
He had routed the command through the family network so suspicion would point toward us if anyone discovered it.
Did Eleanor know?
Police recovered messages between her and Graham.
Eleanor: Julian is turning Clara against us again.
Graham: He will not be a problem after Thursday.
Eleanor: I do not want details.
Graham: Then do not ask for them.
She accepted the promise without asking what it meant.
After the crash, Graham helped Eleanor convince me that Julian’s work obsession caused his death. He encouraged her to call me irresponsible for continuing the company.
He entered our apartment during the funeral and stole the red car.
Then he waited.
Halcyon needed my leadership to survive, but grief made me withdraw from public life. Graham gained influence while believing I would eventually sell.
Instead, I rebuilt the company privately and refused every acquisition.
Matthew’s trust became his alternate route.
I returned to the mansion after Eleanor requested an interview in exchange for cooperation.
She sat inside the drawing room with Detective Monroe and two attorneys.
The police had restricted her movement but had not yet charged her with the full conspiracy because they were separating what she knew from what she chose not to know.
Eleanor looked older.
Not weaker.
Age did not create remorse.
“Did you know Graham planned to kill Julian?” I asked.
“No.”
“You told him you did not want details.”
“I assumed he would remove Julian from the company.”
“How?”
“I did not ask.”
“You did not want an answer that would make you responsible.”
She looked toward her attorney.
“I never touched the car.”
“You helped him access our medical profiles.”
“I arranged ordinary appointments.”
“You forged my estate signature.”
“Graham said the trust allowed family administration.”
“You drugged my son.”
Her composure cracked.
“Valerie poured the milk.”
“You gave her the medication.”
“He needed to remain calm.”
“You slapped him after drugging him.”
“He reached for Dylan.”
“He reached for his own toy.”
She raised her voice.
“That child has always carried the arrogance Julian taught him.”
Matthew was six years old.
Eleanor hated him because he loved his father without apology.
I stood.
“You no longer have permission to remain in this house.”
Her face changed.
“My husband left me lifetime residence.”
“The trust clause ends if the resident commits violence against a beneficiary’s child or uses the estate for criminal activity.”
“You would evict your own mother?”
“You threw Matthew out of the family every time you called him that boy.”
Police served the trust termination notice.
Eleanor had thirty days to leave, subject to the criminal investigation.
Valerie would lose access immediately because she held no residence rights.
My mother stared at me.
“You think money makes you powerful.”
“No. Boundaries do.”
Detective Monroe’s phone rang.
Graham had been located at a private airfield.
He was carrying the original red car and a passport under another name.
Federal agents arrested him before takeoff.
Inside his luggage was a sealed envelope addressed to Matthew.

Julian’s handwriting covered the front.
