Chapter 24 - The Wedding

It rained.

Of course.

After two years of financial investigations, courtrooms, family collapse, and postponed plans, weather decided to contribute.

The ceremony moved indoors.

The chapel windows fogged.

Chloe panicked about her hair.

I laughed.

Ethan stood at front in dress uniform.

I wore ivory gown.

No military jacket.

Not because ashamed.

Because I wanted to be bride.

General Ward whispered:

“Civilian disguise.”

“Don’t start.”

Chloe walked ahead.

Red? No, wedding maybe deep green. Doesn't matter.

She was steady.

No designer purse.

No crisis.

Rebecca handed me Dad’s letter before ceremony.

“You want it with you?”

I folded and tucked into small inner pocket.

Not superstition.

Memory.

Ethan took my hands.

The officiant spoke.

I barely heard.

When vows came, I said:

“I promise to never confuse love with permission.”

Ethan blinked.

That line was not in rehearsal.

He answered:

“I promise to never make protection an excuse for control.”

Chloe cried loudly.

Everyone laughed.

After ceremony, we ate chocolate cake.

No mother slapping anyone.

Success.

At reception, Chloe pulled me aside.

“Mom called from prison.”

“You answered?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“Congratulations.”

I waited.

“Anything else?”

“No.”

That was almost miraculous.

“She asked what dress looked like. I told.”

“Okay.”

“She cried.”

“That’s hers.”

Chloe smiled.

“You really are Dad.”

“Unfortunate.”

We danced.

General Ward toasted Dad without turning him into legend.

“He was stubborn, impatient, and usually right exactly often enough to be unbearable.”

Perfect.

Ethan’s toast:

“Natalie once told me family means people who show up. I disagree. Plenty of harmful people show up. Family means people who respect the door when it closes.”

I glared.

“That was good.”

“I wrote it.”

“Obviously.”

We laughed.

That night, after everyone left, I opened Dad’s letter again.

One line:

If Margaret pressures you, do not punish her for being afraid. But do not reward pressure either.

For first time, I understood both halves.

I had stopped rewarding pressure.

Now maybe I could stop punishing her in my head.

Not by restoring access.

By letting my life become larger than what she did.

The next years would test that.

Margaret would eventually come home from prison.

Chloe would decide how much relationship she wanted.

I would decide mine.

But the criminal case, trust case, Blue Ridge, house, foundation, and assault were all resolved.

No hidden file waited.

No secret witness.

No unclaimed fortune.

May you like

Only relationships.

Those are harder than lawsuits.
