Chapter 1

Rain tapped softly against the kitchen window.
Gray afternoon light filled the small suburban home.
Mara Bennett stood barefoot beside the counter, staring at an elegant gold-foil wedding invitation.
Not addressed to her.
Addressed to...
Luca Romano.
Her fiancé.
There wasn't one with her name on it.
She turned the envelope over twice.
Nothing.
For a long moment she convinced herself there had to be a mistake.
Maybe hers had been delayed.
Maybe it had been mailed separately.
Maybe...
She already knew she was lying to herself.
With trembling fingers, she picked up her phone.
Her mother's number was still saved under one simple word.
Mom.
Helen answered after only two rings.
"Mara?"
"Hi, Mom."
"I just wanted to ask something."
Helen sighed impatiently.
"What is it?"
"I think my invitation got lost."
Silence.
Just rain against the glass.
Then Helen spoke.
"It wasn't lost."
Mara stopped breathing.
"What do you mean?"
Another pause.
Long enough to hurt.
"Vanessa doesn't want you there."
The words landed like stones.
Mara stared at the rain-covered window.
"I'm her sister."
"I know."
Helen replied coldly.
"But she doesn't want you ruining her moment."
Mara closed her eyes.
Ruining...
Her moment.
"I don't understand."
Helen's voice became even flatter.
"Vanessa spent months planning this wedding."
"The photographers."
"The guest list."
"The magazine coverage."
"She doesn't want unnecessary distractions."
Mara whispered,
"I'm a distraction?"
Helen didn't hesitate.
"You always have been."
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
For years...
It had always been Vanessa first.
When they were children, Vanessa received birthday parties at expensive country clubs.
Mara received homemade cupcakes.
When Vanessa graduated college, the family hosted two hundred guests.
When Mara graduated with honors...
Her parents mailed a congratulation card three weeks late.
Every achievement she earned had somehow become an inconvenience.
Yet...
She still kept hoping.
Still believed one day things might change.
"I understand."
she whispered.
Helen didn't apologize.
Didn't hesitate.
"Good."
"I knew you'd be mature about it."
The call ended.
Mara slowly lowered the phone.
She stood perfectly still.
Not crying.
Not speaking.
Just staring at the silver-framed photograph sitting beside the coffee maker.
She and Luca.
Standing on a cliff overlooking Positano.
The sunset behind them painted the sky orange and gold.
He had proposed there six months earlier.
Not with a grand audience.
Not with photographers.
Just the two of them.
And a promise.
The front door opened.
Luca stepped inside, rainwater still clinging to his charcoal suit.
He immediately noticed her face.
"What happened?"
She forced a smile.
"It's nothing."
He walked closer.
"Mara."
She looked away.
"My family finally decided they don't need to pretend anymore."
He gently took the phone from her hand.
"What did they say?"
She couldn't answer.
She simply handed him the invitation addressed only to him.
Luca read it once.
Then looked at the empty kitchen table.
"They invited me..."
"But not you?"
She nodded.
He was silent for several seconds.
Long enough for his expression to change.
Concern.
Confusion.
Then something colder.
He looked at the engagement photo from Positano.
Then back at Mara.
"Good."
She blinked.
"...Good?"
He nodded once.
"Then we'll do this properly."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
A slow smile crossed his face.
Not one of happiness.
One of certainty.
"They have no idea..."
He reached into his briefcase and removed a thick cream-colored folder.
Inside were architectural drawings.
Venue contracts.
Guest lists.
Travel itineraries.
Across the top page were two words.
Villa Serafina.
Positano, Italy.
Luca looked into her eyes.
"They're worried you'll ruin one wedding."
He gently squeezed her hand.
May you like
"They have no idea..."
"...you're about to have one they'll never forget."
