Chapter 4 - The Partner Aaron Feared
The person who helped Evelyn was Aaron’s business partner, Charles Grant.
Charles had worked beside Aaron for seven years.
He spoke at the funeral.
He hugged Emma and promised she would never face the company alone.
Then he quietly gave Evelyn access to Aaron’s archived email account.
Laura discovered that Charles had also attempted to change ownership records after Aaron’s death.
The protected trust stopped him.
Emma met Charles inside Laura’s office one week later.
By then, she was staying with Samuel and Margaret.
Her suitcase had been replaced.
Her clothes were dry.

Charles looked toward Laura.
“I want my attorney present.”
Laura smiled slightly.
“You requested this meeting.”
Charles shifted in his chair.
Emma studied him.
Aaron had trusted this man.
Or perhaps he had stopped trusting him before the accident.
“Why was Aaron moving assets?” Emma asked.
Charles did not answer.
Laura placed bank records on the table.
Aaron had discovered Charles was using company funds for personal investments.
When confronted, Charles blamed accounting errors.
Aaron began transferring his personal interests into the protected trust so Charles could not claim them after his death.
“Did Aaron plan to remove you?” Emma asked.
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“He was emotional.”
“He was careful.”
“He was destroying the company.”
“You mean he was discovering what you stole.”
Charles stood.
“This conversation is over.”
Two investigators waited outside the office.
Charles stopped when he saw them.
He had expected Emma to be frightened.
He had not expected her to cooperate with authorities.
The investigation moved quickly.
Financial records proved Charles had redirected money into shell accounts.
Evelyn discovered some of the transfers after Aaron’s death.
Instead of reporting Charles, she made an agreement with him.
He would help her challenge Emma’s inheritance.
Evelyn would allow him to keep control of the company.
The forged email was only one part of their plan.
They also prepared property transfer documents designed to suggest Aaron intended to leave everything to Evelyn.
None carried valid signatures.
None survived legal review.
Charles was charged with fraud and financial theft.
Evelyn faced charges connected to forgery and attempted estate manipulation.
Emma sat through every interview.
Each new fact hurt.
Aaron had been carrying fear while pretending everything was fine.
He had protected her without telling her how dangerous the situation had become.
One evening, Emma watched his video again.
This time, she noticed something in the background.
A blue hospital wristband on the desk.
She paused the recording.
Dr. Collins examined the image.
“That is from St. Matthew.”
“When was Aaron here?”
The doctor checked old records with Emma’s permission.
Six weeks before the accident, Aaron had visited the hospital after experiencing chest pain.
Tests showed severe stress but no immediate heart problem.
During the visit, he told Nathan he feared Charles and Evelyn were trying to gain control of his assets.
He also revealed that Emma was pregnant.
“He was planning to tell you everything after the first ultrasound,” Nathan said.
Emma pressed her hand to her mouth.
“He never got the chance.”
“No.”
Nathan handed her a sealed envelope found inside Aaron’s old hospital file.
Aaron had left it with him.
Inside was another letter.
Emma,
I keep waiting for the perfect moment to explain what is happening.
There may never be one.
Charles has been stealing.
My mother has been helping him hide certain records because she fears scandal more than dishonesty.
I am moving everything I can into protection for you and the baby.
If I sound afraid, it is because I finally understand how far people will go when money becomes more important than love.
Emma lowered the letter.
Aaron had known.
Not about the accident.
But about the betrayal.
He had carried the truth alone because he wanted to protect her pregnancy from stress.
Emma wept for the conversations they never had.
Then she made a decision.

Aaron’s company released a public statement.
