Chapter 3 - Ryan’s ExplanationRyan waited outside Kara’s condo the next morning.

I saw him from the window.

No glasses.

Probably broken.

He held flowers.

That irritated me more.

Kara looked through the blinds.

“Want me to call police?”

“No.”

“Want me to hit him?”

“No.”

“Shame.”

I almost smiled.

Lily was asleep on the couch.

I stepped outside.

Did not let Ryan enter.

He looked terrible.

“Megan.”

“Why did you sign the affidavit?”

His rehearsed apology died immediately.

“What?”

“The paternity challenge.”

His face changed.

“Martin called you.”

“Yes.”

“He wasn’t supposed to.”

I laughed once.

“Good start.”

“Megan, listen.”

“No. Answer.”

He looked toward the parking lot.

“Mom said it was routine.”

“Routine DNA test on your daughter?”

“She said the trust needed verification.”

“The trust attorney says no test was required unless somebody challenged her.”

Silence.

“So your mother created the challenge.”

“Yes.”

“And you signed.”

“She said it would clear everything.”

“Then why not tell me?”

“Because you hate when Mom gets involved.”

“Correct.”

“She told me if we handled it quietly, Lily would be confirmed and she’d never bring it up again.”

“Did you provide your DNA?”

“Yes.”

“Did you provide Lily’s?”

“No.”

“Then why sign that it was collected properly?”

Ryan closed his eyes.

“I didn’t read every page.”

I stared.

There was the man I married.

Not evil.

Worse in a different way.

Conveniently absent from his own decisions.

“You signed a sworn affidavit about our child without reading it?”

“Mom’s lawyer said it was fine.”

“Your mother’s lawyer.”

“Yes.”

“Not yours.”

“No.”

“Not Lily’s.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“Did you know your mother planned to humiliate Lily at the party?”

“No.”

“You said she promised she wouldn’t touch her.”

“She was angry about the trust.”

“What did she tell you she would do?”

“Demand you admit the truth.”

“What truth?”

He looked away.

“That Lily might not be mine.”

I felt something cold move through me.

“You believe that?”

“No.”

“Then why let her say it at Lily’s birthday?”

“Because if I stopped Mom, she said she’d make the challenge public.”

I stared.

“So you chose private humiliation.”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you chose.”

He started crying.

I did not care yet.

Then he whispered:

“You don’t understand what she can do.”

There.

Not:

What she believes.

What she can do.

“What can she do to you, Ryan?”

He went completely still.

“Megan…”

“What has she been threatening?”

“Nothing.”

Lie.

I knew his face.

Four years married.

I knew.

“You are terrified of her.”

“She controls the family money.”

“You have your own inheritance.”

“Not all of it.”

“Your job?”

“I can get another job.”

“Then what?”

He looked at the door behind me.

Lily slept inside.

His daughter.

Still he hesitated.

Then:

“If the trust gets audited, everything falls apart.”

My heartbeat changed.

“What everything?”

He shook his head.

“I can’t.”

“You mean you won’t.”

“Megan.”

“Go.”

“Please.”

“Go before I call police.”

He stepped closer.

“I love Lily.”

I looked at him.

“You watched your mother slap her.”

“I froze.”

“You froze before she hit her. You froze after. You froze when I asked about the trust. You freeze every time protecting us costs you something.”

His face collapsed.

I went inside.

Then Martin called.

He had received the first mandatory audit notice.

Three years of adviser transactions.

Linda had recommended more than six million dollars in transfers from Descendant Trust reserves into entities associated with Bennett family members.

Not illegal automatically.

But one recipient name stood out.

RB CONSULTING GROUP.

Ryan Bennett.
