Chapter 18 - Patricia Outside Prison

Patricia did not contact me.

That was the first good decision she made after release.

Six months.

A year.

No card.

No surprise.

No church ambush.

Nothing.

Daniel spoke to her by phone once a month.

Visited twice.

Lily knew.

She did not ask to go.

Then Rachel called.

“Patricia wants to write Lily a letter.”

“How old?”

“Six.”

“No.”

Rachel answered:

“Okay.”

No pressure.

Then Patricia sent through Rachel a letter to me instead.

Not sealed.

You can destroy this.

Good.

I read.

I am learning that apology becomes another demand if I keep asking you to receive it.

That line surprised.

Then:

I will not ask about Lily through Daniel anymore.

I will not ask for photographs.

If she ever wants to know me, I will answer whatever she asks truthfully.

Then:

If she never does, that is a consequence I earned.

I sat with it.

No reply.

Then Lily overheard Daniel talking about Grandma Patricia.

“Is she out of jail?”

“Yes.”

“Can she come here?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because we have rules to keep you safe.”

“Is she still bad?”

I hated that question.

I answered:

“She did very harmful things. People can change how they behave, but we still use boundaries.”

Lily thought.

“Like when kids hit at school?”

“Bigger than that.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Do you hate her?”

“No.”

Surprised myself.

Not anymore.

Then Daniel.

His parenting time expanded to alternate weekends with overnights.

No Patricia.

He was dating a woman named Natalie.

He introduced only after a year.

Good.

Natalie knew history.

She did not try to replace.

Then Daniel asked:

“Would you be okay if Mom met Natalie?”

I laughed.

“That has nothing to do with me.”

He smiled.

“I’m still learning.”

Yes.

Then I dated too.

A man named Marcus? Avoid confusion. Call him Andrew Cole.

We lasted a year.

Ended.

No trauma.

Just incompatible.

That felt wonderful.

Not every ending came from abuse.

Then Lily’s first grade family project.

Draw people who help you.

Mom.

Dad.

Aunt Megan.

Grandma June, my mother.

Teacher.

No Patricia.

Daniel did not correct.

Good.

Then one winter Patricia was hospitalized for pneumonia.

Daniel went.

Lily asked why.

“Because she’s my mom.”

“Do you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Even though she hurt me?”

Daniel looked at me.

I stayed silent.

His answer.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Loving someone doesn’t mean what they did was okay.”

Lily nodded.

Then:

“Do you love Mommy?”

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

I felt no threat.

Love can survive marriage.

Then:

“Are you getting married again?”

“To Mommy?”

Lily laughed.

“No.”

Good.

Then Patricia recovered.

She sent no guilt message.

Daniel returned.

Life continued.

Then at seven, Lily asked the question we knew would come.

May you like

“Can I meet her?”

Continue to the next part: After years of no contact, Lily herself asks to meet Patricia, forcing Emily and Daniel to decide whether accountability has become enough for one carefully controlled conversation.
