Chapter 21 - Ethan’s Name

Ethan had carried his mother’s surname all his life.
Unlike prior story, he didn't take name. It was his family name. Fine.
At forty eight, he considered changing it.
“Why?”
“Every time I see Hale, I think of Mom.”
I said:
“Lily is Hale.”
“That’s why I don’t.”
He stayed.
Eventually he realized surname did not belong to Margaret exclusively.
Neither did family history.
He and Lily visited Harold’s childhood town.
Old photographs.
Good memories.
Bad.
No need erase.
Ethan started mentoring men raised in controlling households? Maybe user prefers ordinary healing, not public advocate. Keep private.
He changed one thing.
He stopped answering every family call immediately.
Small.
He joked:
“My greatest rebellion is voicemail.”
True.
Our marriage stabilized.
No secret betrayals.
No affair twist.
No surprise child.
We had enough.
At our twentieth anniversary, we went to dinner alone.
No family estate.
No donors.
No speeches.
Ethan raised glass.
“To paper.”
I laughed.
“What?”
“The deed.”
“No.”
“The occupancy agreement.”
“No.”
“The court order?”
“No.”
“What then?”
He smiled.
“To reading before signing.”
I laughed so hard people stared.
That was our dark humor.
Then he said:
May you like
“And to you.”
Better.
