Chapter 4 - THE ACCOUNT CREATED IN MY NAME

The Vale Meridian payment totaled four million dollars.
It entered an account at Sonoran Crest Bank under the name Penelope Hale Consulting.
Hale was my mother’s surname.
I had never created the company.
The account opening documents included my driver’s license, Social Security information, and a video identity verification.
The woman in the verification recording looked like me from a distance.
Same chestnut hair.
Same professional blouse.
Same green eyes.
Her face moved unnaturally.
The recording had been digitally manipulated.
Michael’s design company employed advanced visualization specialists capable of creating realistic property simulations.
One of them had created a false version of my face.
The money moved from the fake account into three destinations.
Coleman Design Holdings.
A Sedona property company owned by Hattie.
An offshore investment fund connected to Vale Meridian.
Michael received nearly two million dollars.
Hattie received eight hundred thousand.
The remaining amount disappeared behind layered transfers.
Northstar’s board placed me under formal investigation.
Rachel Sutton could no longer speak to me privately.
Corporate counsel took over.
My access badge was suspended.
My work email was locked.
The news reached business reporters.
LEGAL DIRECTOR INVESTIGATED IN DEVELOPMENT DATA LEAK.
Michael’s public relations team used the report immediately.
An anonymous source described me as a wealthy executive who created a domestic scandal to distract from corporate theft.
My marriage became the defense for a crime committed against me.
I sat in Naomi’s conference room reading comments from strangers.
They called Donna a hired actress.
They called the chain staged.
They said I had attacked Hattie after being caught stealing.
My mother entered carrying tea.
“Stop reading.”
“I need to understand what they are saying.”
“No. You are punishing yourself with people who know nothing.”
I closed the screen.
“Northstar thinks I sold the files.”
“Do you believe they are investigating honestly?”
“Yes.”
“Then let evidence do its work.”
“I taught you that.”
“You forgot.”
She placed the tea beside me.
Then her expression changed.
“The little machine.”
“What machine?”
“In Hattie’s room. There was a small voice recorder beside the jewelry box.”
“The police searched the card.”
“No. I took the card from the recorder, but I left the recorder itself.”
My home remained secured.
Naomi obtained permission to conduct a supervised evidence search before Hattie collected final belongings.
The voice recorder was still inside the pearl jewelry box.
Hattie had forgotten it because Donna removed the card.
The recorder contained internal memory independent of the removable card.
A forensic technician recovered deleted files.
The earliest recording was eighteen months old.
Hattie placed the device inside my office during family conversations because she wanted proof that I secretly controlled Michael.
Instead, she recorded herself.
Her conversations with Michael filled hours.
In one, Michael explained the false consulting company.
“We use Penelope’s mother’s surname. If anyone notices, it looks like Donna helped.”
Hattie laughed.
“That woman does not understand online banking.”
“She does not need to. We only need her address.”
Donna’s farmhouse address appeared on the corporate registration.
Another recording captured Michael speaking with a man named Julian Vale, chief strategy officer of Vale Meridian.
Julian demanded assurance that the stolen files came directly from Northstar.
Michael answered:
“They come from Penelope’s computer.”
“Does she know?”
“No.”
“Then why create the account in her name?”
“Because if the deal is exposed, she becomes the seller.”
Julian asked whether Michael worried I would cooperate with investigators.
Michael’s answer was quiet.
“She will protect the marriage before she protects herself.”
I stopped the recording.
That was what he believed.
Not without reason.
I had hidden his missed mortgage payments from friends.
Corrected his contracts.
Paid Hattie’s medical bills.
Allowed him to claim shared ownership of my home at parties.
Every act of loyalty taught him that I could be used.
The final recording had been made three days before Donna arrived.
Hattie asked what would happen if the property transfer failed.
Michael said:
“Then we pressure her into signing the loan package.”
“How?”
“Northstar announces the Arcadia project Monday. Once Vale Meridian publishes similar plans first, Penelope will be blamed. She will need my help.”
“And if she refuses?”
“She loses her career. Without the company, she will stop acting superior.”
Hattie sounded pleased.
“You should have broken her pride years ago.”
“I tried.”
“What about Donna?”
“She is visiting soon. Make sure she leaves believing Penelope’s marriage depends on obedience.”
The chain was not part of the corporate plan.
It came from Hattie’s cruelty.
But the opportunity to humiliate Donna had been deliberately arranged.
Michael knew my mother was coming.
He chose to remain away.
He expected Hattie to frighten her.
Then he returned at precisely the moment Hattie knew to begin crying.
His arrival was not accidental.
The entire confrontation had been staged to pressure me emotionally before the false corporate leak became public.
Michael did not expect the doorbell camera to preserve audio.
He believed only video recorded.
I had upgraded the system months earlier after noticing Hattie near my office.
Naomi delivered the recovered recordings to police, Northstar investigators, the title fraud unit, and federal financial authorities.
Vale Meridian immediately suspended Julian Vale.
He denied authorizing illegal payments.
The recording contradicted him.
The account in my name was frozen.
Two million dollars remained inside Michael’s design company.
Before investigators could secure it, the money moved.
Michael transferred everything into a trust controlled by Hattie.

Then Hattie emptied the trust and disappeared.
Continue to the next part: Michael learns that his mother has abandoned him with every forged signature while taking the stolen money for herself.
