Chapter 3 - The Husband Who Heard Two Versions of the Truth

Martin unlocked the bathroom using a master key.

The door opened.

Caleb stood in the hallway wearing his black tuxedo.

Concern filled his face when he saw Mara barefoot on the marble floor.

Then he noticed the water.

The fear became immediate.

“Your water broke.”

“Yes.”

“Why did no one tell me?”

Mara looked at Eleanor.

“Your mother locked me inside.”

Caleb stared at her.

Eleanor lifted the recorder.

“She became confused.”

Mara almost laughed.

“I am not confused.”

“She found this device and created a story after hearing an edited conversation.”

Martin stepped forward.

“The file was not edited.”

Eleanor looked at him with hatred.

“You placed the recorder.”

“Yes.”

Caleb turned.

“Why?”

Martin had managed Hawthorne Manor for more than twenty years.

He knew the Vale family well.

His late wife had worked as an accountant for Caleb’s grandfather.

Before she died, she warned Martin that Eleanor was moving company assets without approval.

Martin began collecting evidence after learning the wedding would include an emergency board vote.

“The recorder was placed inside the sitting room,” he explained. “Someone moved it into the bathroom trash.”

Eleanor looked toward Adrian, who now stood several feet down the hallway.

The groom had followed Caleb.

His face changed when he saw the device.

Caleb noticed.

“What is on it?”

Mara held out one hand.

“Listen.”

Eleanor moved between them.

“She is in pain. She does not understand what she heard.”

Caleb looked toward his wife.

Mara’s face was pale.

Her hair clung to her forehead.

She held her stomach through another contraction.

He stepped closer.

“Tell me what happened.”

“Your mother took my phone.”

Caleb looked at Eleanor.

“She locked me inside so the baby would not be born before midnight.”

“That is ridiculous.”

Mara continued.

“She and Adrian planned to complete a company transfer before the trust recognized our child.”

Caleb turned toward Adrian.

The groom lifted both hands.

“I do not know what she means.”

“Then listen to the recording,” Martin said.

He played the transferred file from his phone.

Eleanor’s voice filled the hallway.

“That child should never have existed.”

Caleb became perfectly still.

The audio continued.

Adrian discussing the merger.

Eleanor explaining the inheritance order.

The prepared physician.

The planned accusation against Mara.

Every sentence stripped another layer from the family image.

When the recording ended, nobody spoke.

Wedding music still drifted from the terrace.

Guests applauded downstairs, unaware that the groom stood in a hallway listening to evidence of his own conspiracy.

Caleb looked at his mother.

“Did you lock Mara inside to delay the birth?”

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“I was protecting the company.”

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

The word broke something in his face.

Mara watched him carefully.

The recording had predicted he would choose the Vale name over her.

Eleanor saw the uncertainty.

She moved closer to her son.

“Caleb, think.”

“I am thinking.”

“The company supports hundreds of families.”

“You planned to call my child illegitimate.”

“Only if necessary.”

Mara flinched.

Caleb turned toward her.

The horror in his expression appeared genuine.

“I never knew.”

Eleanor immediately pointed toward Mara.

“She wants you to believe that.”

Mara stared at her.

“You locked me behind a door.”

“Because you refused to think beyond yourself.”

“I am in labor.”

“And the wedding matters.”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“The wedding does not matter more than my wife.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“This merger protects all of us.”

Caleb looked at him.

“You discussed destroying my family during your wedding.”

Adrian’s confidence weakened.

“It was business.”

“No.”

Caleb removed his cuff links and placed them on a nearby table.

“It was betrayal.”

Mara’s pain intensified.

She grabbed the wall.

Caleb moved immediately and supported her.

“We are going to the hospital.”

Eleanor blocked the hallway.

“If you leave before the vote, Charles takes control.”

“Then let him.”

“You will lose everything.”

Caleb looked at his mother.

“No.”

He placed one arm around Mara.

“I almost lost everything behind that door.”

The statement silenced Eleanor.

Martin called emergency services.

Caleb retrieved Mara’s phone from Eleanor’s clutch.

He handed it back.

“I am sorry.”

Mara looked at him.

“For what?”

“For believing Mom when she said you were resting.”

“You did not hear me?”

“The music was loud.”

“You asked once.”

His face changed.

Mara continued.

“You accepted her answer because it was easier.”

Caleb did not defend himself.

“You are right.”

The honesty mattered.

But it did not erase what happened.

Paramedics arrived through the service entrance.

As they helped Mara onto a stretcher, a woman in a pale gold gown approached from the terrace.

Vanessa Vale.

Adrian’s bride.

She looked from her new husband to Eleanor.

“What is happening?”

Adrian tried to guide her away.

Martin stopped him.

“She deserves to hear the recording.”

Vanessa listened.

Her expression transformed from confusion into horror.

“You married me while planning a company crime?”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Not here.”

She stepped away from him.

“No. Here.”

Guests began appearing near the corridor.

The secret could no longer remain private.

Eleanor looked around at the gathering crowd.

For the first time, she understood that the wedding had been ruined.

Not by Mara’s labor.

By the truth.

Then Martin received another message.

The board transfer documents had already been submitted with Caleb’s electronic signature.

Caleb had never signed them.

Someone had forged his authorization.

All eyes turned toward Adrian.

Continue to the next part: The forged transfer will expose how deeply Adrian and Eleanor planned the takeover, while Mara must face childbirth knowing her husband’s family may have stolen everything before she escaped.
