Chapter 7 - THE PHOTOGRAPH OF THE INVESTIGATOR

Rachel did not deny meeting James Holloway.

She explained that he contacted the financial crimes unit three months earlier and offered information about Meridian.

He claimed Daniel and Vivian were moving investor funds without board approval.

Rachel met him twice as a potential cooperating witness.

“Why did you not disclose that?” Jonathan asked.

“Because James was providing information under a confidential agreement.”

“He sat at the dinner table.”

“He insisted on attending. He said Daniel planned to distribute transfer documents there.”

My mother watched Rachel carefully.

“James never cooperates unless he is protecting himself.”

Rachel looked toward her.

“You disappeared before I joined law enforcement.”

“Your father did not.”

The room went still.

Rachel’s father, Thomas Sloan, had worked as an investigator on the original Orchard case.

He was the key witness who vanished before prosecution.

Rachel believed he abandoned the family.

Evelyn claimed Thomas had been murdered.

Rachel demanded evidence.

My mother refused to reveal it until the Bennett trust seal was found.

Every truth came with a price.

I had reached my limit.

“No more exchanges.”

Everyone looked at me.

“My father withheld information because he wanted to control my choices. Vivian did the same. Daniel did it. You are doing it now.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You do not understand the danger.”

“Then explain it without demanding ownership.”

She looked at the floor.

For the first time, the woman claiming to be my mother appeared uncertain.

Rachel’s team collected the certificate for authentication.

The signature and paper appeared old, but that proved only that the document had existed for years.

It did not prove Evelyn retained authority.

Jonathan searched the trust registry.

No forty nine percent Orchard certificate appeared in the active records.

“Arthur may have hidden it,” Evelyn said.

“Or you created it before disappearing,” Jonathan replied.

She turned toward him.

“You have been living from Bennett money for twenty years.”

Jonathan’s face became pale.

He had served as independent trustee after my father’s death.

Annual trust statements showed reasonable legal fees.

Evelyn claimed a second account existed.

Orchard Reserve.

She said Jonathan controlled it.

Jonathan denied the accusation.

I ordered an immediate independent audit.

He objected.

“As beneficiary, you cannot replace the trustee without cause.”

“The accusation is cause for review.”

My voice surprised even me.

The salad stain remained on my blouse beneath my coat.

Hours earlier, I had apologized while Daniel laughed.

Now lawyers, investigators, and a woman returned from the dead were waiting for my decision.

Power had not arrived through wealth.

It had arrived when I stopped assuming everyone else understood my life better than I did.

The audit began before sunrise.

Orchard Reserve existed.

Jonathan had not disclosed it in the annual reports.

More than eighteen million dollars had moved through the account over twelve years.

Payments went to protected witnesses, private medical care, security companies, and anonymous legal settlements.

Some could have been legitimate.

Others carried no explanation.

Jonathan refused to discuss the beneficiaries.

“Confidentiality orders remain active.”

“Whose orders?”

“Arthur’s.”

“My father is dead.”

“The legal obligations are not.”

Evelyn smiled without warmth.

“He will protect Arthur’s secrets until everyone else is destroyed.”

Rachel received another alert.

Three Meridian servers had uploaded files under my executive identity.

The documents appeared to show that I authorized transfers into Orchard Reserve.

The timestamps began two years before I learned the account existed.

Someone was building a second financial history around my name.

Again.

Olivia examined the access pattern remotely.

The files did not come from Daniel’s device.

They came from Jonathan’s law office network.

Jonathan stood.

“That is impossible.”

Rachel asked him to surrender his phone.

He complied.

Inside was an encrypted message sent to Daniel six weeks earlier.

She still has not opened the envelope.

Daniel replied:

Then we have time.

Jonathan looked genuinely shocked.

“I did not send this.”

I remembered how many people had already said those words.

Olivia checked the device registration.

The message had been sent through a cloned account, but the authentication key came from Jonathan’s physical office.

Someone had access.

Rachel ordered the office secured.

By the time investigators arrived, the private archive was empty.

Every Orchard Reserve file had been removed.

Jonathan’s longtime assistant was missing.

Sabrina Collins.

She had worked for him before Daniel hired her.

The affair had not introduced her to Meridian.

Jonathan had.

Then a courier arrived at the church carrying a sealed package addressed to me.

Inside was the missing tape from my father’s hidden room.

The label had been written in fresh black ink.

Recorded today.

Continue to the next part: Arthur’s impossible recording exposes a secret agreement between Evelyn, Jonathan, and Daniel, while Meridian’s board prepares to blame Claire publicly for the entire collapse.
