Gerald Pike hired criminal counsel.
The trustee referred the document to authorities.
No one screamed.
The seriousness had become quiet.
Forensic review showed Charles’s signature image matched a 2020 beneficiary authorization.
Copied.
Who created the PDF?
Gerald’s office software.
Gerald admitted his assistant prepared it.
Why?
He said Lorraine brought handwritten instructions and told him Charles had approved the change before death but paperwork had not been finalized.
Gerald believed a posthumous memorialization could be signed by the adviser?
That made no legal sense.
He knew.
His attorney stopped him from answering further.
Then Lorraine.
Did she know the signature was copied?
Her response through counsel:
She believed Gerald was implementing Charles’s prior wishes.
Evidence?
None.
Charles’s recording said the opposite.
Then the requested change.
Zia reserve:
$150,000 to $0.
Harper supplemental:
Increase by $150,000.
Why Harper?
Melissa’s daughter had been accepted to an elite private school.
Tuition high.
Lorraine wanted full funding through graduation.
Charles’s trust allowed education support.
But not by erasing another named child.
The bank rejected the amendment because Charles was dead and Lorraine lacked authority.
Again, Lorraine failed.
But the attempt mattered.
Then another request six months later.

Classify Zia as inactive beneficiary.
That succeeded temporarily.
Lorraine kept trying until she found a path that did not require changing the trust.
Paperwork persistence.
Then Melissa found out.
She came to our house.
Without Lorraine.
“I didn’t know she tried to take Zia’s reserve.”
“I believe you,” I said.
She cried.
“I asked Mom if Harper’s tuition could be covered.”
“That’s normal.”
“She said Dad had left enough.”
“She lied.”
“Yes.”
Then:

My stomach tightened.
Lorraine had asked Melissa to sign a statement last year.

Zia spends most of her time with biological father and is not financially dependent on Travis.
False.
Melissa refused.
Lorraine became furious.
Two months later, White Briar got the first trust money.
Melissa now wondered if Lorraine’s help was partly meant to make her cooperative.
“Did she ask again?”
“No.”
But the leverage existed.
Money makes silence easier.
Then Greg arrived with company records.

Gerald’s firm.

Gerald said it was a refunded retainer.
Melissa had no retainer.
The forensic accountants kept tracing.
Then Nathan Colby withdrew from the house purchase.

Unresolved title and conflict concerns.
Private email:
Lorraine, I will not proceed. Your representations regarding authority were inaccurate.
The development plan collapsed.
Lorraine’s investment in Colby Urban dropped in value.
Palm Beach closing at risk because her financing depended on Cedar sale.
For the first time, the consequences came from markets and contracts, not Travis.
Then Lorraine called me.
Not him.
“Hannah.”
“Yes?”
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
Silence.
“You should.”
“I don’t need to hate you to keep Zia away from you.”
Her breathing changed.
There.
The thing she feared more than losing money.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean until Zia feels safe around you, there will be no unsupervised visits.”
“You can’t do that.”
“I’m her mother.”
“Travis is my son.”
“And Zia is not your access point to him.”
She started crying.
I did not hang up.
I also did not change the boundary.
Then she whispered:
“I bought her something better.”
I closed my eyes.
