Chapter 23 - What Florence Keeps
Florence did not leave Hawthorne with nothing.
That was important.
She kept:
Furniture she owned.
Edward’s photographs.
Her jewelry.
Savings after legal costs.
The additional trust accounting payments.
Social Security.
Edward’s pension survivor benefit.
Christopher’s relationship.
Her memories.
She lost house she believed should be hers.
But legally she had never completed ownership.
She also lost certainty that everyone would accept her version.
Years later, Florence told Christopher’s cousin:
“Sabrina’s father took my house.”
The cousin repeated to someone who knew my mother.
Helen asked:
“Want correct?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“The court corrected.”
I did not need win family gossip.
Then Florence’s letter came.
We already discussed.
She admitted searches.
That was enough.

One day he asked:
“Do you want original Hawthorne file?”
“No.”
“It’s historical.”
“Give archive.”
He transferred to trust’s records retention.
Not my inheritance.
Then old wooden box itself.
Empty.
My mother used for photographs.
