Chapter 5 - The Guests Who Came to Testify

The six guests were interviewed separately.
Once the police explained that surveillance footage existed, their stories began changing.
Helen Dorsey claimed she believed Clara participated in a strange family joke.
Marlene Shaw said she never saw Eleanor force anyone beneath the table.
Patricia Reed insisted her husband’s medical letter was preliminary.
Susan Bell said her brother, Judge Harold Bell, knew nothing about the gathering.
Diane Keller described the luxury gifts as charitable appreciation.
Caroline Mercer claimed the maternity room was designed for safe home delivery.
Each explanation protected one part of the plan.
None explained the whole.
The teenager who worked for the catering company had recorded more than the assault.
His phone remained inside his shirt pocket while he moved between the kitchen and dining room.
The audio captured Eleanor speaking before the guests arrived.
She told them Clara had become unstable and might behave strangely.
She asked them to remain calm, observe carefully, and remember specific phrases.
Refused food.
Crawled voluntarily.
Threatened family.
Obsessed over baby.
Unfit after delivery.
The women repeated the phrases during lunch as though rehearsing.
Marlene asked when the judge would receive their statements.
Susan replied that her brother expected the packet after seven.
Patricia said Dr. Reed would finalize the medical opinion once Clara entered the west wing.
Caroline said a transport team would move her after the child was stable.
Helen asked whether Sebastian knew.
Eleanor answered:
My son knows only what I allow him to know.
The recording also captured Julian entering the kitchen.
He told Eleanor the morning sedative had not worked strongly enough.
She ordered him to increase the evening dose.
Julian refused.
Eleanor threatened to expose money he had taken from the family foundation.
He agreed to help move Clara into the west wing but said he would not touch the medication again.
His fear did not absolve him.
It explained why he looked panicked when I entered.
He knew the plan was already collapsing.
Officer Natalie received an arrest authorization for Dr. Malcolm Reed after investigators found he had written a medical opinion about Clara without examination and supplied controlled medication under false records.
He was stopped at a private airfield.
Inside his car were unsigned birth documents, psychiatric admission forms, and a temporary death certificate.
The death certificate carried Clara’s name.
Cause remained blank.
My hands went numb when Natalie showed me the photograph.
Dr. Reed claimed it was an emergency template used by private maternity practices.
No ordinary delivery plan requires a prepared death certificate in the mother’s name before labor.
The document created a path if Clara did not survive.
The legacy trust would pass her co trustee authority to the child’s guardian.
Eleanor.
Eleanor heard the discovery through her attorney.
She stopped speaking to police.
Her expression changed when the temporary death certificate appeared.
For the first time, she looked frightened of someone other than me.
She asked to speak privately with Julian.
The request was denied until investigators separated their legal interests.
Julian agreed to cooperate first.
He entered the library wearing the same dark suit from the banquet.
His hands shook.
I sat across from him with Robert and Natalie present.
“You changed Clara’s supplements.”
“Yes.”
“You locked her inside the nursery.”
“Yes.”
“You helped prepare the west wing.”
“I approved invoices.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I copied the image into the foundation system.”
“Why?”
“Mom knew about the money.”
“What money?”
Julian had moved more than nine million dollars from the Vance Family Foundation into a private investment project.
He believed the project would return twice the amount before the annual audit.
It failed.
Eleanor discovered the loss.
She promised to protect him if he helped secure control of the legacy trust.
Once the baby activated the port assets, she planned to use family income to cover the missing foundation money.
Julian believed Clara would spend several weeks inside a recovery center.
He claimed he did not know about the death certificate.
I believed that he had not expected murder.
I did not believe he had cared enough to ask.
“Who is The Custodian?”
His face changed.
“Dad’s old trust officer.”
“Name.”
“I never met him.”
“You helped him.”
Julian looked toward Robert.
“Robert knows.”
Robert remained calm.
“I know the title. Not the current holder.”
My father created the role decades earlier.
The Custodian held emergency authority over family records if the trustees became compromised.
The identity remained sealed.
Only the founder, independent counsel, and the Custodian knew the complete succession structure.
After Edmund died, the title should have become inactive.
Instead, someone continued sending instructions to Eleanor.
Julian received messages through a secure account.
Secure the maternal signature.
Complete port merger before birth.
Preserve first grandchild identity.
Remove emotional obstruction.
The messages never used Clara’s name.
They described her as obstruction.
Julian believed Eleanor wrote them.
Eleanor told him they came from the Custodian.
“Did the Custodian order the banquet?” I asked.
“No.”
“Did he order the west wing?”
“I do not know.”
“Did he order the death certificate?”
Julian looked at the photograph.
“No message mentioned death.”
Robert asked whether the secure account remained active.
Julian surrendered the device.
Ethan isolated it and sent one controlled message.
The first grandchild plan has failed.
A reply arrived within seconds.
Then begin the second line.
Nobody in the room understood.
Robert searched the legacy records.
The trust referred once to a second line of succession.
It activated if the first qualifying pregnancy failed or became legally disputed.
The second line belonged to Julian.
He was unmarried.
He had no known child.
Julian stared at the screen and whispered:
“That is not possible.”
Another message appeared.
