Chapter 11 - Daniel’s Secret

Daniel asked to meet.

Not at home.

Coffee shop near hospital.

I agreed.

He looked exhausted.

“Your mom told you about the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Did she tell you I found out last year?”

I froze.

“No.”

Of course not.

“How much?”

“Not numbers.”

“What did you know?”

He had found Stonebridge statement in mail.

Saw trust name.

Asked Monica.

She said Andrew left education money.

Then Ray appeared.

Told Daniel it was none of his business.

Daniel backed off.

“Why?”

“Because your mom told me to.”

“You knew Ray was getting money?”

“Not until three months ago.”

He saw Dalton Home Services payment on Monica’s laptop.

$7,500.

Asked.

Mom said roof work.

Roof had not been touched.

He confronted Ray.

Ray said he had prepaid materials.

Daniel threatened to call Stonebridge.

Then Mom begged him not to.

Why?

“She said she had signed things that could get her in trouble.”

Daniel stayed quiet.

Again.

“I thought I was protecting her.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That phrase should be illegal too.”

“Yeah.”

Then he revealed something he had not told police initially because he feared misreading it.

A week before my collapse, Ray offered him $10,000.

“For what?”

“To convince you not to go to the Stonebridge meeting.”

My skin went cold.

“How?”

Ray said:

Tell Emma she should wait until twenty one.

Explain taxes.

Encourage college first.

Daniel refused.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I planned to after I figured out what the hell was happening.”

Again proof.

Again delay.

Then:

“I started recording Ray.”

He handed his attorney approved copy to police.

One conversation in garage:

DANIEL:

Why do you care if Emma sees statements?

RAY:

Because Monica used funds wrong and Emma will blow up.

DANIEL:

Then tell her.

RAY:

She’s a kid.

DANIEL:

She’s eighteen.

RAY:

Exactly. Eighteen year olds don’t get handed seven hundred grand.

There.

Ray’s philosophy.

Then:

DANIEL:

It’s hers.

RAY:

Family money isn’t anybody’s until family agrees.

My father had warned.

Then Daniel:

DANIEL:

Are you giving her those pills?

Silence.

RAY:

What pills?

DANIEL:

The stuff Monica gives her.

Ray:

Mind your business.

Not proof.

But Daniel suspected.

Why did he not stop?

He thought pills were mild prescription anti anxiety medication Mom had chosen.

He did not know unprescribed.

Still should have asked.

He admitted.

Then the recording ended with Ray saying:

If Emma walks into Stonebridge Monday, everybody loses.

Monday.

Again.

Daniel asked:

“What does everybody lose?”

Ray:

You like your house?

The house.

Mom and Daniel’s home had a second mortgage.

Why?

Mom borrowed $60,000 trying to replace trust money before I turned eighteen.

Daniel did not know original purpose.

He thought home renovation debt.

She used money to partially cover missing funds.

So if audit exposed, she feared losing house.

Ray used that too.

Everyone was tied by secret debts.

Then Daniel said:

“I’m filing for separation.”

“What?”

“I love your mom.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don’t know if living together right now helps anybody.”

That was unexpectedly healthy.

Maybe temporary.

Maybe permanent.

Caleb?

They would co parent.

Daniel was his stepfather too? Wait Caleb likely mom's son and Daniel stepfather to both. Fine. Daniel has no biological? Still can be stepfather. He cares. Legal contact depending. Fine.

Then I asked:

“Did you call 911 because you believed me?”

He looked confused.

“You were blue.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

He thought.

“Yes.”

Simple.

For years I had wanted someone in that kitchen to believe me before evidence became visible.

May you like

Daniel had been late.

But he had.
