Chapter 5 - The Report About Me

The firm was called Westbridge Intelligence.

Licensed.

Expensive.

The report itself was not illegal.

Spouses hire investigators.

Businesspeople conduct due diligence.

The question was why.

Ryan commissioned it nine months before the gala.

Subject:

EMMA CARTER COLE — FAMILY ASSET EXPOSURE AND BENEFICIAL INTERESTS.

He had asked investigators to determine:

My relationship to Richard Carter.

My beneficial interests.

Expected trust distributions.

Whether Carter Global shares were personally held by me.

Whether any trust assets could be pledged voluntarily.

Whether marital agreements restricted guarantees.

The report was careful.

It said:

Richard Carter was founder and controlling shareholder of Carter Global Holdings through family entities and trusts.

Estimated enterprise value of the broader group could not be reliably determined from public information, but was likely several billion dollars.

Emma Carter held no direct controlling interest in Carter Global.

She was a beneficiary of several family trusts.

Her mother’s estate had funded a separate trust with a scheduled distribution opportunity around Emma’s thirty-fifth birthday.

Estimated amount:

Between $7 million and $9 million depending investment performance.

The report said:

Beneficiary control is limited before distribution. Any pledge would require beneficiary participation and may be restricted by trust terms.

Ryan knew.

He knew my father was not imaginary.

He knew I had money.

He knew my mother’s trust was separate.

And he knew he could not reach it unless I voluntarily signed.

Then his messages with Vanessa.

Ryan:

Her old man is worth billions and she acts like she’s living off me.

Vanessa:

Richard’s money isn’t hers.

Ryan:

Enough of it will be.

Vanessa:

Trust assets aren’t collateral unless Emma signs.

Ryan:

Then Emma signs.

Months before the lockout.

That changed how I understood the pressure.

Not our whole marriage.

There was no evidence Ryan married me as a con.

He had not hired the investigator before our wedding.

The business crisis came later.

The targeting came later.

Important.

Love can be real at one point and become corrupted by entitlement.

We did not need to rewrite every happy memory as fraud.

Then another document.

A draft postnuptial amendment prepared by Ryan’s corporate lawyer but never sent to mine.

It proposed:

Joint financial-management consultation.

Mutual consent for guarantees above certain amounts.

And a power of attorney allowing either spouse to execute “ordinary financial-support documents” for the other during temporary incapacity.

I almost laughed.

“Could that have let him sign my trust guarantee?”

Caroline shook her head.

“Not without broad language and likely separate requirements. It was a draft fantasy.”

“Did I ever see it?”

“No.”

“Then irrelevant legally.”

“Relevant to intent.”

Yes.

Then Vanessa’s role.

She had told Ryan:

“Don’t try to get a power of attorney through marriage. Emma’s lawyers will destroy it.”

Good advice.

Then later she helped trap me.

People are inconsistent.

Then another Ryan message:

If she won’t back the company, why am I married to someone sitting on eight figures?

Vanessa:

Because you married her before Harbor Point exploded.

Ryan:

Not funny.

That line hurt.

Not because it proved he married me for money.

Because it showed how money had begun replacing intimacy.

Then:

Ryan:

She’ll get another distribution next year.

Vanessa:

Which is hers.

Ryan:

We’re a family.

Vanessa:

That’s not a legal theory.

I stared at that one.

Vanessa knew.

Then why help later?

Because deals, loyalty, fear, money, arrogance.

No one is consistent enough to be simple.

Detective Morales used the report to support motive.

Caroline used it in divorce discovery.

Carter Strategic did not use it to increase lender pressure.

Richard’s team had to wall itself off from my personal family-law case.

That was important.

Then I confronted my father.

“Did you know Ryan investigated me?”

“No.”

“Would you have told me to leave if you knew?”

“Yes.”

“Which is why I might not have told you.”

He nodded.

Then:

“I would have tried to take over.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Progress.

Then he asked:

“What do you want now?”

“I want the criminal case to follow evidence.”

“Yes.”

“I want the company restructuring handled without you using me as reason.”

“Yes.”

“I want my divorce separate.”

“Yes.”

“And I do not want you buying me another apartment.”

He almost smiled.

“You already rented one.”

“Exactly.”

Then:

“I do want security outside for two weeks.”

“Done.”

I glared.

He corrected:

“If you authorize.”

“Yes.”

He laughed softly.

Then the criminal prosecutors asked for a meeting.

The private-investigator report did not create a new crime by itself.

But combined with the lockout, the coercion, and the gala assault, it destroyed Ryan’s claim that all of this was one spontaneous marital argument.

He had been studying how to access my money for months.

May you like

He had been told he needed my consent.

And instead of accepting that, he had begun treating consent like the last obstacle in a deal.
