Chapter 8 - The Evacuation Route

The smoke was real.

A supply closet burned on the floor beneath us.

The fire itself was small.

The sprinkler failure was not.

Someone disabled water pressure in the maternity wing and triggered the evacuation system.

Hospital staff moved mothers and babies toward a protected transport corridor.

Federal agents closed the public elevators.

The neonatal doors unlocked under fire protocol despite the security restriction.

Mara immediately understood the purpose.

“They do not need to enter the room if the hospital carries Gabriel into a public corridor.”

Grace refused to place him inside the standard evacuation bassinet until Emilia confirmed the assigned nurse.

The nurse named on the transport list was Patricia Sloan.

Already in custody.

Someone had not updated the roster.

A substitute nurse approached wearing a mask and cap.

Grace looked at her badge.

The photograph did not match the woman’s eyes.

“Matteo.”

I stepped between them.

The woman abandoned the bassinet and ran toward the stairwell.

Luca blocked her path.

She pulled a syringe from her pocket.

He caught her wrist before she reached him.

Federal agents restrained her.

The syringe contained a powerful sedative.

Her identification named Laura Vescari.

Dominic’s daughter.

Family records said Laura died at age nine from meningitis.

She was alive.

Another child erased from the public tree.

Laura refused to speak until Mara showed her Dominic’s blood from the caretaker’s tunnel.

Her expression broke.

“Is he alive?”

“We do not know.”

“They promised he would be safe.”

“Who?”

“The Steward.”

Laura had lived under several names since childhood.

Dominic told her the Rossi family would kill her if anyone knew she survived.

Anthony placed her inside private schools and security work.

She became an operative for Sentinel Household Services, a contractor protecting Rossi properties.

She believed Isabella had captured Grace because Grace planned to sell Gabriel to a rival family.

The council fed every participant a different lie.

Grace was told Matteo abandoned her.

I was told Grace withdrew.

Laura was told Grace would betray the child.

Dominic was told obedience kept his daughter alive.

Isabella was told controlling the heir preserved the family.

The system did not require everyone to know the truth.

It required each person to fear a different outcome.

Laura admitted the fire diversion.

She was supposed to sedate Grace, move Gabriel into a transport bassinet, and deliver him to a private ambulance.

The ambulance waited beneath the east loading entrance.

Federal agents intercepted it.

The driver carried forged transfer orders sending Gabriel to Saint Augustine Family Hospital.

No such facility existed.

The ambulance’s navigation system showed a destination outside the city.

A private airstrip owned by Rossi Agricultural Holdings.

A jet waited there with engines warm.

Passenger manifest:

Isabella Rossi.

Infant Anthony Rossi.

Arthur Ross.

My father’s alias.

Anthony intended to take Gabriel personally.

Agents surrounded the airstrip.

The jet contained baby supplies, medical equipment, and passports.

No passengers.

Someone warned Anthony before they arrived.

Only a limited group knew the operation had been discovered.

Mara began reviewing internal communications.

One federal agent had sent a message from the hospital stairwell.

Target aware. Airstrip compromised.

The agent disappeared during the fire response.

His name was Daniel Moretti.

Luca’s younger brother.

Luca stared at the photograph.

Daniel had joined federal law enforcement eight years earlier after refusing to work for the Rossi family.

Everyone praised him for escaping our influence.

The council may have placed him there deliberately.

Luca handed his weapon to Mara.

“You believe I knew.”

“I believe we verify everyone.”

He accepted temporary detention without argument.

Trust built on family names had already failed too many times.

Daniel Moretti’s phone connected to a secure number registered to Judge Paul Santoro.

Santoro had approved several Continuity Household orders.

He was also my godfather.

Federal agents reached his home.

The judge was gone.

His study contained sealed family court files, adoption papers, and photographs of Rossi children under different identities.

One current photograph showed Gabriel inside the hospital less than an hour after birth.

Someone had taken it through the nursery glass.

On the back:

The heir resembles Anthony. Paternity challenge unnecessary unless Matteo resists.

They had considered using the false blood sample to remove me as father.

They decided Gabriel looked enough like the family to preserve the easier story.

Grace read the note.

“They were deciding whether you were useful.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

I turned the card over.

Maternal status disposable after transfer.

Grace looked at our son.

For the first time since I found her, she did not cry.

Her face became calm.

“Then we stop waiting for them to decide what happens next.”

Continue to the next part: Grace chooses to release the Continuity Household records before the council can erase another mother or child.
