Chapter 8 - The Child beneath the River

The flood control tunnel extended beneath the abandoned station and connected to an old civil defense shelter.

Ward Family Medical Holdings purchased the shelter through a shell company six years earlier.

Public records described it as pharmaceutical storage.

Satellite images showed regular vehicle traffic despite no active license.

Helen provided the access codes before paramedics sedated her.

She asked to speak to me first.

Elena allowed a protected video call.

Helen lay on the terminal floor with blood darkening her coat.

“I did not know Gabriel was Noah until three years ago.”

“When did you know he was alive?”

“Eleven years ago.”

“You knew an infant connected to my delivery survived.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“Price threatened every adoption case.”

“You protected convictions.”

“I protected children already living with families.”

“You protected the system that stole them.”

Helen closed her eyes.

“I told myself temporary secrecy would allow a controlled review.”

“Eleven years is not temporary.”

“No.”

“Did Daniel know?”

“Yes.”

My husband had met Price after Noah’s delivery.

Helen said Daniel learned the baby remained alive but had been moved before he could stop it. Price demanded two hundred thousand dollars to reveal the location.

Daniel accepted money from an undercover state account created by Helen, then transferred it into Noah Family Protection as part of an attempted operation.

Adrian managed the trust because he pretended to cooperate against Price.

The operation failed.

Gabriel disappeared.

Daniel’s later vehicle death occurred while he was traveling to meet Paul Ward about the child.

Officially, Daniel lost control during a storm.

Helen believed Paul arranged the crash.

“You let me think my husband hid money.”

“I kept the operation sealed.”

“You let Claire think her father dismissed what she saw.”

“He was ordered not to tell her.”

“You ordered him.”

“Yes.”

Every adult had believed secrecy protected the children.

The secrecy gave Adrian eleven years to build a weapon from one stolen boy.

I looked at Helen through the screen.

“Why should we trust your tunnel codes?”

“You should not trust me. Verify them.”

That was the first responsible thing she had said.

Agents tested the codes against facility records and sent drones into the first corridor.

The shelter contained medical rooms, dormitories, broadcast equipment, and an archive server.

Thermal imaging detected nine people.

Five small bodies.

Four adults.

Adrian.

Lorraine.

Paul.

Unknown fourth adult.

The children were separated across two rooms.

A direct assault risked triggering locked gas systems in the medical wing.

Adrian had connected the shelter to industrial anesthetic tanks.

He could make every child unconscious or dead within minutes.

The command team needed interior access.

Claire remembered Adrian teaching her a phrase during captivity.

When the family breaks, the Mother opens the door.

Lorraine controlled the gas system.

Adrian controlled the broadcast.

Paul controlled transport.

The fourth adult may have been the Witness.

We identified the shelter’s old maintenance route through municipal plans.

It led beneath the medical room.

Marcus entered with a small team.

Claire remained at command despite arguing.

I remained beside her.

The live drone feed showed Gabriel sitting on the floor with four younger children.

He wore a gray sweatshirt and held one child’s hand.

Adrian entered the room.

“Your sister chose the government.”

Gabriel answered:

“She came.”

“She did not come beneath the river.”

“She came close.”

The boy had learned to challenge language carefully.

Adrian crouched.

“Rebecca does not want you.”

“You said she brought blood.”

“She brought false blood.”

“Then she knew what you wanted.”

Adrian struck him.

Claire stood.

“Get him out.”

Marcus was still moving through the maintenance route.

Lorraine appeared on another camera.

She wore medical scrubs and held a tablet connected to the gas controls.

Paul argued with her.

“We move now.”

“The child file is not open.”

“Adrian lost the cabin.”

“He has Rebecca’s blood from the floor.”

“It degraded.”

“The sister is enough.”

They needed Claire’s DNA.

Adrian’s terminal attempt had been intended to capture a sample from the vial. Our substitute delayed them.

Lorraine opened a refrigerated container.

Inside were dozens of labeled blood tubes.

One carried Claire’s name.

Collected six months earlier.

The network already had what it needed.

The final file began authenticating.

A screen displayed:

MATERNAL MATCH CONFIRMED.

SIBLING MATCH CONFIRMED.

IDENTITY TRANSFER RECORD AVAILABLE.

The command center froze.

The independent genetic system had not verified the result, but the shelter archive believed Gabriel was Noah.

Lorraine smiled.

“Open it.”

A fourth figure stepped into view.

Dr. Miriam Ward.

Helen’s younger sister.

The Nurse.

Miriam had claimed her office system was compromised.

Instead, she entered the shelter voluntarily.

She took the tablet from Lorraine.

“No.”

Paul raised his weapon.

“You brought Rebecca’s test result to Adrian.”

“I brought him enough to keep Gabriel alive.”

“You kept him valuable.”

Miriam looked toward the children’s room.

“I am ending it.”

She entered a code.

The gas system shut down.

Emergency vents opened.

Marcus’s team received the signal and breached the medical wing.

Paul fired.

Lorraine ran toward the archive.

Adrian seized Gabriel and moved toward the river exit.

Miriam tackled Paul.

A shot struck her.

Claire screamed at the screen.

Marcus reached the children’s room seconds later.

Four children were secured.

Gabriel was gone.

Adrian dragged him through the lower passage toward a submersible transport channel.

Lorraine carried the identity drive.

Paul remained wounded but conscious.

Miriam lay near the controls.

Before losing consciousness, she pointed toward the archive screen.

“Do not trust the match.”

The system showed another line beneath Gabriel’s record.

BIOLOGICAL IDENTITY: NOAH HALE.

LEGAL IDENTITY: GABRIEL WARD.

TRANSFER STATUS: DUPLICATED.

A duplicate identity meant two living children may have been assigned to Noah’s original record.

Continue to the next part: The archive claims two boys may be carrying Noah’s identity while Adrian escapes with Gabriel and the original transfer drive.
