Chapter 19 - The Last Restitution Payment

Daniel completed supervised release without violation.

Restitution took longer.

The total order included company/insurer losses and my out-of-pocket medical costs.

His divorce distribution had already covered substantial amount.

Post-release earnings handled remainder.

No one garnished him into homelessness.

Court protected statutory living allowances.

Over years, payments.

Northline’s insurer recovered its share.

Northline received remaining restitution.

Because I had sold majority company, successor entity handled accounting.

No double recovery.

At fifty, I received notice:

Daniel’s restitution obligation satisfied.

I stared.

Money closed.

Could not repay trust.

Did not need.

Then Northline sale completed fully.

I sold remaining interest to employee/investor group.

I retained advisory role six months.

Then gone.

Company kept name.

No “Claire Dawson Design.”

I didn't need monument.

I invested proceeds.

Paid taxes.

Set up charitable foundation? Maybe no, too grand. I created modest donor-advised fund supporting patient legal/financial assistance.

Then travel.

Maine.

Arizona.

Italy once.

No revenge lifestyle.

Just time.

I dated occasionally.

Never remarried.

Not because Daniel ruined trust.

I liked living alone.

Maybe someday.

No deadline.

Then Megan retired at fifty-nine? Timeline: she was 43 at start, 14 years later? Claire 50 means 14 years, Megan57. Could still work. We exchanged holiday cards after eventually becoming friends.

One card:

Still checking seals.

I laughed.

Then Daniel.

After face-to-face, we wrote twice a year.

Not intimate.

He remarried? Could be later. Maybe he started relationship with Sarah Mills, 45, bookstore manager. He told me because he wanted full disclosure? Not necessary. But his future can be ordinary. Let's have he married at 53 to Laura Kent? Avoid Laura, already sister. Emily Ross. But Claire not involved.

Maybe he stayed single. Either is fine. Could make him rebuild without romantic validation. Let's say he later married Karen Doyle, a payroll clerk, after disclosing conviction. Not necessary to meet Claire.

Then one letter:

I’m engaged. She knows everything.

I replied:

I wish you both well.

No jealousy.

Then he married.

No invitation.

Appropriate.

Then cancer.

At fifty-two, a scan showed suspicious spot.

My body returned to fear.

Biopsy benign scar tissue.

I cried in parking garage.

Then remembered Daniel once used uncertainty to write my future.

Not now.

I called Laura.

Megan.

No one answered for me.

Then at fifty-four, I received jury summons and laughed at universe.

Excused due travel.

No more court.

Then I reviewed legal archive.

Boxes:

Divorce.

Criminal victim notices.

Northline forensic.

Medical.

How long keep?

James retired but successor advised what to retain.

I shredded duplicates.

Official court/medical records remained where required.

I kept:

Final divorce judgment.

One restitution satisfaction.

Daniel’s first accountability letter.

My medical pathology.

Not videos.

Not altered pill packet photos.

Not Zoom clip.

No trauma museum.

Then I found one old Northline document Daniel forged.

Certified copy.

No longer legally needed personally.

Attorney confirmed official file preserved.

I shredded.

Watching strips fall felt good but not cinematic.

Then I remembered his phrase:

Nobody will question me.

He had been wrong.

Megan questioned.

Rebecca questioned.

James questioned.

Police questioned.

Jury questioned.

And eventually Daniel questioned himself.

But the first person who needed to question him had always been me.

I did.

May you like

Late.

Still.
