Chapter 2 - The Fortune Julian Never Knew Belonged to His Wife

Daniel guided Audrey toward the heated SUV.

She stopped before entering.

“What happens to them?”

Daniel looked toward Julian and Eleanor.

“They remain inside until counsel arrives.”

Julian stepped down from the porch.

“You cannot detain me in my own home.”

Daniel’s voice remained professional.

“No one is detaining you.”

He gestured toward the closed gates.

“You may leave on foot at any time.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“Open those gates.”

“I take instructions from Mrs. Vance.”

Eleanor turned toward Audrey.

The contempt in her face was beginning to fracture.

“What exactly have you done?”

Audrey handed Theo and Noah to a waiting nurse inside the vehicle.

Only after confirming that both babies were warm did she turn back.

“I protected my children.”

Julian looked toward the mansion.

“This house belongs to Mercer Holdings.”

“No.”

“The deed is in the company portfolio.”

“The deed is held by Celeste Property Trust.”

Eleanor’s face changed at the name.

She knew it.

Julian did not.

“What is Celeste Property Trust?”

Audrey stepped closer beneath Daniel’s coat.

“My mother’s estate.”

Julian stared at her.

“You said your mother left you a modest inheritance.”

“I said she left me private assets.”

“You lied.”

“I protected information your family had no right to control.”

Eleanor descended one step.

“Celeste Vance owned regional hotels.”

Audrey looked at her.

“My mother owned far more than hotels.”

Audrey’s mother had spent thirty years building a private investment network through property trusts, shipping companies, technology funds, and commercial land.

She avoided publicity.

When she died, every asset transferred to Audrey under layers of independent management.

Audrey was twenty four.

She told almost no one.

Her mother’s final letter contained one warning.

Never reveal the full shape of your power to someone who needs you to be smaller.

When Audrey met Julian, he claimed to despise inherited wealth.

He spoke constantly about building the Mercer name through his own ambition.

She wanted to know whether he could love her without knowing what she owned.

For several years, she believed he did.

Then Mercer Holdings began struggling.

Julian came home exhausted.

Eleanor spoke of layoffs.

Audrey quietly authorized loans through Christian’s investment firms.

She purchased the debt on the mansion.

She acquired the land beneath Mercer headquarters.

She funded Julian’s largest expansion through companies whose names he never investigated.

He thanked investors he had never met.

He never thanked his wife because he never knew she was saving him.

Julian shook his head.

“This is impossible.”

Daniel opened a secure tablet.

“The mansion deed, company debt, fleet leases, insurance guarantees, and six executive properties are controlled by Vance entities.”

Eleanor looked toward the black vehicles.

“How much of Mercer Holdings does she own?”

Daniel answered without emotion.

“Enough to suspend every major operation before midnight.”

Julian’s face lost color.

“You cannot do that because of a family argument.”

Audrey looked at him.

“You expelled two newborn heirs from protected property while attempting to force an unauthorized medical procedure.”

“They are not heirs until we confirm paternity.”

Daniel’s expression became colder.

“The Vance trust recognizes them through hospital records and Mrs. Vance’s declaration.”

Julian looked toward the heated SUV.

For the first time, fear entered his face when he saw the twins.

Not paternal concern.

Financial realization.

Audrey saw it.

That hurt more than his accusation.

Eleanor noticed the security officers moving toward the side entrance.

“You are not entering my rooms.”

Daniel replied calmly.

“Estate security is preserving documents connected to financial coercion and attempted fraud.”

“What fraud?”

Audrey looked at the legal folder still beneath Eleanor’s arm.

“The documents you prepared.”

Eleanor held it tighter.

“These concern the Mercer family.”

“They concern my sons.”

Julian stepped toward his mother.

“What is inside?”

Eleanor did not answer.

Audrey almost felt pity for him.

He had trusted Eleanor so completely that he never considered she might be using his anger for a larger purpose.

Daniel extended one hand.

“The folder.”

Eleanor refused.

A security officer displayed a court authorization issued through Christian Vale.

The emergency protocol had triggered a temporary asset preservation order.

Eleanor finally surrendered the documents.

Daniel opened the folder.

Inside were paternity declarations, trust challenges, and a petition claiming Audrey was emotionally unstable after childbirth.

Julian read the first page.

His confusion became horror.

“Mom.”

Eleanor remained silent.

The petition requested temporary guardianship of the twins.

Not for Julian.

For Eleanor.

It also stated that if the children were found unrelated to Julian, Audrey would lose access to all Mercer residences and marital funds.

Audrey laughed once.

“You prepared to take my children and leave me without a home.”

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“I prepared for every possibility.”

Julian turned toward her.

“You told me this was only a paternity test.”

“I was protecting you.”

“You planned to take my sons.”

“If Audrey was unstable, someone responsible needed control.”

Audrey stepped forward.

“You created the accusation, arranged the eviction, and planned to use my exhaustion as evidence.”

Eleanor’s voice remained cold.

“You were never suitable for this family.”

Audrey looked toward the mansion glowing behind her.

“You are standing inside my property, wearing jewelry purchased through a company I rescued, telling me I was not suitable for your family.”

For the first time, several household employees looked directly at Eleanor.

The power shift had become visible.

Christian called through Daniel’s secure phone.

He informed Audrey that Mercer corporate accounts were frozen pending review.

The board had received notice that their primary creditor was exercising emergency authority.

Julian stared at the screen.

“You are the creditor?”

Audrey answered quietly.

“I am the reason your company survived long enough for you to become arrogant.”

Daniel turned another page inside Eleanor’s folder.

A medical authorization carried a physician’s signature.

The same doctor who had declared Audrey emotionally fragile without examining her.

Christian had already investigated him.

He was connected to three previous Mercer family disputes.

Each involved a wealthy woman who lost control of property after marriage.

Audrey looked toward Eleanor.

“This was not your first time.”

Eleanor’s face finally revealed fear.

Continue to the next part: Audrey will uncover the women Eleanor targeted before her, while Julian learns that his mother built the Mercer fortune by destroying the wives who married into it.
