Chapter 4

The room fell silent the moment Harrison Gonzales stepped inside.

At sixty-seven, he no longer walked as quickly as he once had, but he carried himself with the quiet confidence of a man who had spent four decades negotiating billion-dollar deals without ever needing to raise his voice.

His charcoal overcoat was damp from the rain outside.

In his left hand was the same worn leather briefcase Leah remembered from her father's funeral eight years earlier.

He stopped beside Skylar's hospital bed.

For several long seconds, he didn't speak.

Instead, he gently adjusted Captain Bun so the stuffed rabbit rested comfortably beneath the little girl's arm.

Only then did he look at Leah.

"I'm sorry we meet again under these circumstances."

Leah managed a small nod.

"So am I."

Harrison's eyes softened as he looked at the unconscious child.

"I promised your father I'd always protect her."

Then he turned toward Derek.

Everything warm disappeared from his expression.

Derek crossed his arms.

"I assume Leah exaggerated whatever story she told you."

Harrison didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he placed the leather briefcase on the small visitor's table and calmly opened the brass locks.

Click.

Click.

Inside were dozens of carefully organized legal folders.

Every document had colored tabs.

Every page was meticulously labeled.

Naomi frowned.

"What exactly is all this?"

Harrison removed one thick blue folder.

Without looking up, he replied,

"The reason you're about to discover that greed is a terrible investment."

Derek scoffed.

"This isn't a courtroom."

"No."

Harrison closed the briefcase.

"It's somewhere far more important."

He glanced toward Skylar.

"It's a little girl's hospital room."

Leah watched quietly.

She had almost forgotten how her father used to describe Harrison.

"If Harrison ever says very little..."

"Pay attention."

"It means he's already won."

Harrison opened the folder.

"Mr. Morgan..."

He spoke with the same calm tone a judge might use while reading a verdict.

"You requested access to Skylar Morgan's trust approximately three weeks ago."

Derek's eyes widened.

"How do you know that?"

"Because your attorney contacted my office."

Leah slowly turned toward Derek.

"You already tried?"

He avoided her eyes.

"I was exploring options."

Harrison corrected him.

"No."

"You attempted to petition the trust on the basis that Skylar was medically unlikely to survive."

Naomi's face immediately paled.

Leah felt as if the air had disappeared from the room.

"You..."

She stared at Derek.

"...you were planning this while she was still fighting?"

He finally snapped.

"I'm being practical!"

The words echoed through the room.

"If she dies, the money just sits there!"

Leah took one horrified step backward.

Skylar lay only a few feet away.

Still breathing through a ventilator.

Still alive.

And her own father was discussing her inheritance as though she were already gone.

Harrison slowly removed another document.

"This is the original trust agreement signed by Richard Collins."

Leah's father.

"The document has never been amended."

He placed it on the table.

"There is a clause almost no one knows exists."

Derek forced a confident smile.

"I've read the trust."

"No."

Harrison calmly replied.

"You've read the public summary."

He tapped a page near the bottom.

"This clause was sealed until someone attempted to challenge the trust."

Naomi swallowed nervously.

"What clause?"

Harrison looked directly at Derek.

"Mr. Collins anticipated the possibility that someone might one day see his granddaughter as a financial opportunity rather than a child."

Silence.

"He therefore included an irrevocable protection clause."

Derek frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means..."

Harrison folded his hands.

"...that any person proven to have attempted to exploit, pressure, manipulate, or financially benefit from Skylar Morgan during her minority is permanently barred from receiving a single dollar connected to the Collins family estate."

Derek laughed.

"So?"

"So?"

Harrison repeated.

"It also applies to spouses."

"And future spouses."

"And their descendants."

The smile vanished from Derek's face.

Naomi stared in disbelief.

"What?"

Harrison continued.

"If the court determines your actions constitute financial exploitation of a minor..."

He paused.

"...your unborn child is permanently excluded from every trust, inheritance, scholarship, charitable distribution, and family investment connected to the Collins estate."

Naomi's lips parted.

"No..."

She looked at Derek.

"You never told me that."

"I..."

For the first time, Derek had no answer.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Two uniformed officers entered the room, followed by a hospital administrator.

Behind them stood Detective Emily Carter from the Baltimore Police Department.

She carried a thin evidence folder.

"Mr. Derek Morgan?"

He turned slowly.

"Yes?"

"We've received a report regarding suspected financial coercion involving a protected medical trust."

Derek frowned.

"This is ridiculous."

Detective Carter remained calm.

"We also have statements from hospital staff who overheard your comments regarding your daughter's trust fund."

She glanced toward Leah.

"And the hospital security system recorded your visit entering and leaving this room."

Derek looked toward the ceiling for the first time.

A small security camera overlooked the hallway entrance.

His confidence disappeared.

Completely.

Naomi stepped away from him.

Just one small step.

But Leah noticed.

May you like

So did Harrison.

The alliance built on greed was already beginning to crack.
