Chapter 10 - The Fourth Signal

Thomas’s bathroom recording changed the final question.

The second transmitter did not send only the federal team’s location.

It sent two separate signals.

One traveled to Crowe and Beatrice.

The other traveled to Thomas.

He wanted both sides alerted when I pressed the fob.

Why?

The third click activated the Reed trust.

A hidden fourth signal opened the Carrington server archive and began copying every record before federal agents entered.

The tactical raid created confusion while Thomas extracted the evidence remotely.

My rescue had become cover for his data theft.

The files he took included current federal housing contracts, medical clinic records, Sentinel Meridian communications, and proof of Arthur’s bribery.

They also included evidence of Thomas’s own role in the original phantom shelter system.

He had stolen everything before investigators could preserve it.

Then he disappeared with Elaine and Beatrice.

Mara issued international alerts.

No border crossing appeared under their names.

The Carrington research helicopter landed at a private airfield and was found empty.

Three vehicles left in different directions.

The trail ended.

The criminal cases continued without them.

Vance pleaded not guilty to the federal fraud but admitted assault through a state agreement after the bathroom recording made denial impossible.

His attorney described the violence as an isolated loss of control.

The prosecutor played six months of hidden footage showing earlier threats, restraint, and injury.

The court rejected isolation.

Arthur faced conspiracy, bribery, wire fraud, and unlawful detention charges.

Beatrice remained a fugitive.

Dr. Price entered a cooperation agreement and surrendered patient files.

Crowe survived surgery and began negotiating with internal investigators.

Emily’s legal marriage to Vance was restored on paper long enough for the court to recognize that mine had never been valid.

She wanted no relationship with him.

We were connected only by the same man’s violence and the same family’s use of law.

Laura Bennett regained control of part of her estate.

The five patients removed from Carrington Ridge received independent advocates.

The facility closed.

The Reed patent trust came under court supervision because Thomas had created it through hidden evidence and possible fraud.

I accepted the review.

If public money had helped build the technology, the public deserved restitution.

I did not defend my father’s name.

I defended the right to determine facts without another family manufacturing them.

Marcus remained suspended for six months.

He attended internal hearings, surrendered communications, and admitted keeping Thomas’s message from me.

We did not return to being close immediately.

He visited during my recovery.

Sometimes we spoke.

Sometimes we sat in silence.

He never again called secrecy protection.

My facial cuts healed into pale lines near the hairline and cheek. The scar across my palm remained more visible.

I kept it uncovered.

Not as proof of strength.

As proof that survival had a cost people should not romanticize.

Rachel helped me sell the house after federal evidence teams released it.

I did not want the marble bathroom repaired for another family.

A victim services foundation purchased the property and converted it into temporary housing for women leaving financially powerful abusers.

The bathroom mirror was removed.

The hidden wall cavity became part of a training room explaining digital surveillance and coercive control.

I never returned for the opening ceremony.

Some rooms did not need me inside them again.

Nine months after the raid, I testified before a federal oversight committee.

I described the forged signatures, behavioral clinic, compromised tactical system, and how family wealth allowed domestic violence to become an administrative process.

A senator asked why I remained for six years.

I answered honestly.

“Because each incident looked survivable alone, and everyone around me benefited when I treated survival as proof that leaving was unnecessary.”

The room became quiet.

After the hearing, Marcus met me outside.

He carried the original emergency fob inside an evidence case.

“Technicians finished the final recovery.”

“What did they find?”

“A fourth click profile.”

“I pressed it three times.”

“I know.”

The device had registered another press fourteen seconds after tactical agents entered the bathroom.

At that moment, my hand was open and bleeding.

The fob lay beside the medic.

Someone else pressed it.

Body camera footage showed Marcus kneeling near me.

His hands remained visible.

The medic was treating my shoulder.

Two agents restrained Vance.

Arthur and Beatrice stood near the door.

Then a fifth tactical officer entered briefly.

His helmet camera had been disabled.

He reached toward the floor.

He pressed the button.

The fourth signal transmitted the original Reed archive to a location outside federal control.

The officer left before the team count.

His uniform displayed Marcus’s badge number.

His height and build matched my brother.

Marcus stared at the frozen image.

“That is not me.”

“I know.”

“Who had access to your spare equipment?”

“Crowe. The unit quartermaster. Thomas, apparently.”

Rachel called before we could continue.

A package had arrived at my new apartment.

Federal screening found no explosives.

Inside was the black metal case Elaine gave Emily eleven years earlier.

The original Reed archive should have been inside.

It was empty.

Only a small bathroom mirror rested at the bottom.

A red light blinked behind the glass.

My phone rang.

No number appeared.

I answered on speaker.

Elaine’s voice came through.

“Natalie, your father is not the person directing this anymore.”

“Where are you?”

“Do not ask questions they can trace.”

“Is Thomas alive?”

A pause.

“For now.”

“Why are you with Beatrice?”

“Because she finally told me who replaced Marcus inside the raid.”

Marcus moved closer to the phone.

“Who was it?”

Elaine whispered one name.

“Mara Collins.”

We both looked toward the federal building across the street.

Mara stood behind a fifth floor window, watching us.

Her phone was raised to her ear.

Elaine continued.

“The woman you know as Mara was present when Thomas staged his death. She built Reed Security Strategies, recruited Crowe, and placed Vance near Natalie.”

The mirror inside the package activated.

A live image appeared.

Thomas sat tied to a chair inside an unfamiliar room.

Beatrice stood behind him.

Beside her was Mara.

Not the woman watching from the federal window.

Another woman with the same face.

The Mara across the street smiled.

Then every phone in Marcus’s suspended tactical unit received the same message.

THE FIFTH RESPONSE HAS BEGUN.

Boots sounded inside my apartment hallway.

Marcus reached for a weapon he was no longer authorized to carry.

The red light behind the mirror flashed four times.

A voice spoke from the other side of my locked door.

“Federal agents. Step away from Natalie Reed.”

It was Marcus’s voice.

My real brother stood beside me.

Cut to black.

Continue to the next part: Natalie must discover who copied Marcus and Mara, and why the federal response system has been preparing replacements for years.
