The background report described Julian at twenty eight.

Debt.
Family relationships.
Psychological assessments from executive recruitment interviews.
He was intelligent, ambitious, socially persuasive, and highly sensitive to humiliation.
One consultant warned that Julian reacted aggressively when authority was questioned.
Another called him unusually motivated by status.
The final recommendation read:
Suitable for controlled executive development if financial dependence remains undisclosed.
I read the sentence three times.
“Controlled by whom?” I asked.
Marcus shook his head.
“The report does not say.”
Graham had sent it to my father two months before Aurora completed the Core Dynamics rescue investment.
Julian joined the company shortly afterward.
The public story said he applied through an ordinary executive search.
The report proved Aurora knew him in advance.

I felt physically sick.
