Chapter 8 - The Camera Above the Therapy Bars

The clinic disabled every camera immediately.

Security searched my room, therapy area, and medical equipment.

The video feed came from a ceiling camera installed by the facility for fall prevention.

Adrian had not placed a hidden device.

He accessed the vendor’s cloud system through stolen administrator credentials.

The facility used Meridian Health Technologies.

Vanessa had invested in the company.

Dr. Kramer served as a consultant.

The same network supporting the false medical flight also supplied cameras to my rehabilitation clinic.

I had entered a secure facility whose technology connected back to the people targeting me.

No nurse or therapist appeared involved.

The vendor’s weak controls created access.

The clinic moved me to another location using a private transport arranged independently by federal authorities.

No electronic schedule entered the shared system.

The new facility had no Bennett or Meridian connection.

I felt angry at leaving.

Mobility had already taken so much.

Now security determined where I slept.

Julia reminded me that temporary relocation was not surrender.

“I am tired of criminals deciding what room I use.”

“They are not deciding. You are choosing the room they cannot reach.”

The distinction helped only slightly.

The cloud audit identified the stolen administrator credentials.

They belonged to Laura Dean, the nurse who remained at Adrian’s Belize clinic.

She denied providing them.

Her email had been compromised through a fake federal notice.

Adrian sent the message after investigators interviewed her.

He used fear of arrest to steal access.

Laura opened the attachment.

The malware captured her passwords.

Another ordinary mistake became part of the threat.

She cooperated and entered protection.

Adrian’s apartment contained more than the video feed.

Investigators found financial ledgers, client lists, and a folder labeled Mara Continuity.

Inside were three plans.

Plan One: Spousal transfer through incapacity.

Plan Two: Overseas guardianship.

Plan Three: Corporate collapse and acquisition.

If Grant failed to obtain Arden, Adrian intended to damage the company until clients withdrew. Then a private investment group would buy its technology and contracts cheaply.

The investment group was called Northlake Governance Partners.

Its managing director was Samuel Price.

Samuel had served on Arden’s advisory board for five years.

He advised us on banking relationships and acquisition defense.

I trusted him.

Northlake had offered to invest twice.

I declined.

Now documents showed Samuel discussing Arden’s fall with Adrian.

Samuel:

A public marital scandal reduces client confidence.

Adrian:

Grant will create more than scandal.

Samuel:

Do not involve me in personal methods.

Adrian:

You already priced the company after Mara loses control.

Samuel:

I priced distress, not violence.

The distinction might matter legally.

Samuel knew Adrian intended to destabilize Arden through Grant.

He claimed he expected divorce and financial allegations, not a crash or forced flight.

He did not report the plan.

He prepared to profit if it succeeded.

Federal agents searched Northlake’s offices.

Samuel surrendered devices.

He denied laundering money.

Financial records showed Northlake had received eight million dollars from an Adrian connected fund.

The payment was labeled acquisition reserve.

Samuel said investors often placed reserve money before a deal.

He knew the source was opaque.

He accepted it.

The plan had a corporate endpoint.

Grant would transfer Arden.

If courts blocked him, scandal would reduce the price.

Northlake would purchase assets.

Adrian’s clients would gain access or shut down investigations.

Samuel would earn fees.

No secret global empire was required.

A criminal intermediary and a respected investor shared interest in weakening one company.

Samuel was charged with conspiracy and attempted corporate theft after additional messages showed him helping draft the fake acquisition timeline.

He continued denying knowledge of physical harm.

The evidence would be tested.

Arden’s board placed the company into temporary independent stewardship.

I retained ownership but surrendered daily executive authority while recovering and while investigators reviewed internal access.

Some employees feared Northlake would still attempt acquisition.

We amended the corporate charter.

No sale could occur during a founder incapacity claim without independent court review and employee approval.

Appendix Nine protected the marriage.

The new charter protected the company.

Security often improves after someone exposes the door.

Grant entered a federal cooperation agreement requiring complete disclosure.

No promise removed the state assault case.

He identified Adrian’s remaining accounts and safe houses.

He admitted Vanessa knew about the crash planning but claimed she believed he would stage a minor collision.

Vanessa denied that.

He admitted he intended to frighten me and create a disabling event.

He denied intending death.

The car video showed him steering into the barrier at high speed.

A jury would decide intent.

He admitted taking my phone and attempting the fingerprint transfer.

He admitted approving the Belize plan after the hospital doctors said I might regain mobility.

“Why?” Cross asked.

“Because Mara would never forgive me.”

“So you planned to remove her.”

“I planned to complete the divorce.”

“Under sedation in another country?”

Grant looked down.

His language failed when placed beside actions.

He revealed Adrian’s current destination.

A private airfield outside Milwaukee.

Agents reached it before the plane departed.

Adrian was not aboard.

The passenger list included Samuel Price’s assistant and one Bennett accountant.

Adrian used another exit.

Inside the hangar, agents found a wheelchair identical to mine.

A beige sweater lay across it.

A mannequin wore a wig matching my hair.

Someone had practiced moving a false Mara through cameras.

Adrian may have planned to create travel footage showing me leaving voluntarily.

A passport scanner stored one completed test.

Mara Ellis had passed automated verification.

My false identity was ready.

The hangar office contained a signed statement.

I, Mara Ellis, left the United States voluntarily and withdrew every allegation against Grant Bennett.

The signature was copied.

The statement was dated the following week.

Continue to the next part: Adrian prepared evidence showing Mara leaving voluntarily even while she remained under federal protection.
