Chapter 6 - The Sister in the Pink Dress

Vanessa’s paternity file contained two conflicting records.

Her public birth certificate named Nathan Cole as her father.

A sealed laboratory report identified Grant Mercer as the biological father with a probability exceeding ninety nine percent.

Caroline Mercer was her mother.

Nathan Cole had married Caroline briefly after Vanessa’s birth and later raised the child as his own.

When Caroline disappeared, Nathan told Vanessa she had abandoned them.

The same story Grant told me about Evelyn.

Two daughters.

Two missing mothers.

Two fathers teaching children that abandonment explained every silence.

Evelyn sealed the paternity file when Vanessa was seventeen.

Richard claimed public disclosure would destabilize a vulnerable minor and expose her to inheritance litigation.

Evelyn ordered that Vanessa receive independent counsel when she turned eighteen.

Martin Shaw intercepted the notice.

No attorney contacted her.

The file remained sealed.

Richard gained another daughter he could use without telling either sister who the other was.

Vanessa learned the truth only after Ethan began dating her.

At least, that was what she claimed during her second interview.

Ethan approached her at a company event two years earlier.

He knew she was Grant’s daughter because Richard showed him the sealed schedule.

Ethan described me as controlling, emotionally cold, and unwilling to give him children.

At the time, I had suffered two miscarriages.

Vanessa believed he was trapped in a marriage maintained only for corporate appearances.

Their affair began before my current pregnancy.

When I conceived Sophie, Ethan told Vanessa the pregnancy threatened both of them.

If Sophie was born while I remained competent, Vanessa would never gain recognition or trust rights.

Richard offered a solution.

Help create the incapacity event.

Gain temporary placement authority through Cole Family Advocacy.

Open the paternity schedule.

Enter the trust as the older qualifying female descendant.

Vanessa could receive shares.

Ethan could control them through their personal relationship.

My child could be separated from me.

Vanessa told herself she was reclaiming what my father stole.

Then she kicked me.

“Did you know I was your sister when you did it?” Detective Ortiz asked.

“Yes.”

“Did Natalie know?”

“No.”

“Did you intend to harm the baby?”

“I intended to frighten her.”

“You struck a woman at thirty four weeks.”

“My father showed me where.”

“Your father is not an obstetrician.”

“He is a physician.”

“He is also the man benefiting from the transfer.”

Vanessa began crying.

“She had everything.”

I watched the recorded interview from my hospital room.

The sentence carried a childhood I did not know.

Vanessa grew up believing Grant Mercer secretly paid for my schools, travel, and company future while refusing to acknowledge her.

She watched photographs of me beside him in business magazines.

She saw the daughter he claimed publicly.

I grew up believing Evelyn abandoned me and my father sacrificed everything to raise me.

We had both been given stories built to make the other woman responsible.

“Did you hate me?” Detective Ortiz asked.

“Yes.”

“Did you ever speak to her before the affair?”

“No.”

“Then you hated a person created through your father’s version.”

Vanessa looked away.

Evelyn requested permission to speak with me privately.

I almost refused.

Then I remembered she had already admitted sealing the file.

I needed the rest.

“Did you know Vanessa was my sister during the courtroom assault?”

“No. I knew the child in the sealed file was named Vanessa Cole. I had never seen her as an adult.”

“Did you recognize Nathan Cole?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I had no proof the woman beside Ethan was the same child until the file reopened.”

“You could have asked me.”

“You had not spoken to me in twenty years.”

“That did not stop you from calling me daughter in court.”

“No.”

The honesty remained painful.

“Why did Dad hide Vanessa?”

“Grant believed acknowledging her would weaken the company during our divorce. Richard convinced him that Caroline could be supported privately.”

“Did you know Caroline?”

“I met her once.”

“When?”

“Inside a courthouse conference room after she attempted to intervene in our custody case.”

Caroline told Evelyn that Grant and Richard were giving me medication before visits and blaming Evelyn’s home.

She had evidence.

Before she could testify, she was detained under a mental health order signed by Dr. Nathan Cole.

Her own husband declared her unstable.

The hearing proceeded without her.

Days later, Caroline disappeared.

Evelyn tried to locate her but Richard produced records showing voluntary treatment overseas.

The documents were false.

Nathan later told Vanessa her mother chose another life.

The mothers were not enemies.

They had attempted to expose the same system.

Their daughters were raised to become rivals.

A hospital nurse entered with the results of my extended monitoring.

The baby remained stable.

There were no signs of active placental separation.

I could leave the hospital the following morning under protective care.

Relief came carefully.

I had learned that a stable monitor did not make the assault smaller.

Maya received a message from Judge Amelia Grant.

An emergency evidentiary hearing would examine the assault, the forged order, the trust freeze, and the merger vote.

Evelyn would appear as a witness, not a judge.

Vanessa requested permission to testify against Ethan and Richard in exchange for consideration.

No promises were made.

Brooke also wanted to cooperate.

Each person had begun searching for a smaller role inside the crime.

Then Halcyon Ridge nurse Emma Cole sent another recording.

Richard discussed Vanessa after the courtroom plan.

“If she performs well, acknowledge her. If she fails, use Natalie’s injury to remove both daughters.”

Brooke asked:

“And the company?”

Richard answered:

“It returns to the only person Grant trusted.”

“Who?”

Richard smiled toward someone outside the camera.

A woman answered from the doorway.

“Me.”

The voice belonged to Caroline Mercer.

Vanessa’s missing mother was alive.

Continue to the next part: Caroline Mercer appears inside Richard’s secret meeting and claims the company should return to her.
