Chapter 1 - FIVE MINUTES

Vanessa Brooks wrapped her fist around my hair before I understood she intended to touch me.

One second I was standing inside my husband’s executive restroom asking Daniel why his assistant had been sitting behind his desk wearing his suit jacket.

The next, my head snapped backward.

“Vanessa!”

Daniel shouted her name.

Too late.

She pulled harder.

I grabbed the marble counter to keep from falling.

Vanessa had a pair of small office scissors in her other hand.

I saw the silver flash beside my cheek.

Then I heard the sound.

Three fast cuts.

A weight disappeared from the back of my head.

Dark hair fell across the white marble floor.

Vanessa threw the handful beside my shoes.

“Look at you now.”

She smiled.

“He chose me, you pathetic old wife.”

I was thirty two.

She was twenty eight.

The insult was stupid.

The look on Daniel’s face was not.

My husband stood in the doorway wearing a navy suit I had bought him for our tenth anniversary.

For one ridiculous second, I waited for him to come to me.

He moved toward Vanessa.

“What the hell were you thinking?”

Not:

Are you hurt?

Not:

Security.

Not:

Get away from my wife.

He turned to her.

Vanessa shrugged.

“I did it for us.”

For us.

Daniel did not deny the us.

Something inside me became very quiet.

I crouched.

Picked up the hair she had cut from my head.

Vanessa laughed.

That was when I stood.

I slapped her.

Hard.

Her shoulder struck the sink.

Daniel lunged between us.

“Emily!”

Vanessa screamed and came at me again.

I shoved her into the restroom door.

She caught herself on the frame.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

I pulled free.

“No.”

“Everybody stop.”

“No.”

I took my phone from my purse.

Daniel tried to grab it.

I stepped backward into the executive hallway.

“You have five minutes.”

He stared.

“For what?”

“Bring Vanessa to Laura Bennett’s office.”

“My attorney?”

“My attorney.”

Vanessa laughed from behind him.

I continued.

“She apologizes. You tell Laura the truth about the affair. Then you cooperate with the document review.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What document review?”

That told me more than he intended.

I had not mentioned which documents.

“Five minutes.”

He followed me.

“Emily, stop.”

I kept walking.

“You are humiliated. I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

“This has nothing to do with the company.”

I turned.

“Then you won’t mind cooperating.”

His jaw tightened.

Vanessa stepped into the hallway.

Her cheek was red.

My hair still clung to the front of her black dress.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You’re making a scene in my office.”

“Your mistress cut off my hair.”

“You hit her.”

“After she attacked me.”

Two executives had appeared at the far end of the corridor.

A security officer came around the corner.

Daniel saw them.

That mattered to him.

“Go home.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“You have four minutes.”

He grabbed my wrist.

“Put the phone down.”

I looked at his hand.

Then at him.

“Let go.”

He did.

I called Laura.

Speaker.

She answered immediately.

“Emily?”

“Start.”

Daniel’s face changed again.

“Start what?”

Laura’s voice came through the phone.

“Petition granted.”

The hallway became silent.

Daniel stared at my phone.

“What petition?”

Laura continued.

“Emergency standstill order entered. Hartwell Voting Trust proxy suspended pending fiduciary review. Carter Meridian Logistics has been formally notified.”

Daniel’s face drained.

“No.”

The boardroom doors opened behind him.

Two directors came out first.

Then the board chair.

Then Marcus Hale, our chief financial officer.

Nobody looked at Vanessa.

Everybody looked at Daniel.

He stepped toward me.

“You had no right.”

I almost laughed.

“No right to what?”

“You cannot interfere with company voting.”

Laura answered through the speaker.

“The trust can.”

Daniel pointed at my phone.

“Shut that off.”

I did not.

He looked directly at me.

“You own nothing in this company, Emily.”

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through the corridor.

Not my proudest moment.

Not my worst either.

Then I stepped toward the elevator.

Security moved between Daniel and me.

Vanessa stared at everyone as though she had suddenly realized a private affair had walked into a corporate building and become something else.

I looked at my husband.

“Check who actually owns your company before you check on your mistress, Daniel.”

The elevator doors opened.

I stepped inside.

My hands started shaking only after the doors closed.

Laura stayed on the phone.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Go downstairs. Security will escort you.”

“What exactly did the judge grant?”

“A temporary preservation order. Nothing more.”

Good.

I did not want fantasy.

I wanted law.

“No sale. No recapitalization. No new debt against the disputed shares. Daniel’s voting proxy over the Hartwell block is suspended until the court reviews the authorization documents.”

The authorization documents.

That was why I had called Laura two days earlier.

Before I knew about Vanessa.

Before my hair hit the marble floor.

My husband had submitted paperwork claiming I approved a seventy six million dollar transaction involving the company my inheritance once saved.

I had never signed it.

Then Laura said:

“There’s another problem.”

“What?”

“The board just sent me the final transaction package.”

“And?”

“Your signature appears twice.”

I stared at the elevator doors.

“Twice?”

“One is the voting consent we already knew about.”

“What is the other?”

A pause.

“Spousal beneficial interest waiver.”

My mouth went dry.

“What does it waive?”

“Your right to challenge dilution of the Hartwell block.”

I looked at the hair still clutched in my hand.

Daniel had not only expected me to forgive an affair.

May you like

Somebody had already put my name on a document designed to make my ownership disappear.

Continue to the next part: Emily learns the forged waiver was created before she discovered the affair, meaning the plan to weaken her trust had already been moving in secret.
