Chapter 12 - The Wedding Video

I avoided wedding photographs.
Then investigators asked for video.
Not because romance.
Because Malcolm’s behavior during reception.
Our videographer captured hours.
I gave copy.
Watching later was unbearable.
Gregory looked happy.
That was the problem.
During vows, he cried.
When I said:
“I choose you freely.”
His face broke.
Was that guilt?
Love?
Both?
Then Malcolm’s toast.
“To Ashlynn.”
He raised champagne.
“You are exactly the kind of woman this family needs.”
People laughed.
Then:
“Strong enough to carry us forward.”
At the time, compliment.
Now literal.
Carry Hartman Capital.
Then he looked at Gregory.
“And smart enough to know marriage is partnership.”
Partnership.
Then near end video, Malcolm pulled Gregory aside.
No audio.
Body language tense.
Gregory shook head.
Malcolm gripped shoulder.
Then Gregory looked toward me.
I was dancing with Tasha.
His expression.
Fear.
Could he have stopped?
Yes.
He could have walked over.
Told me.
Instead he smiled when I returned.
Then one still photograph.
Malcolm handing Gregory long gift bag before departure.
The bat.
Wrapped.
White ribbon.
Everyone thought champagne or fishing gear.
Malcolm had carried weapon into wedding as present.
Then the cash envelope placed into suitcase by family assistant.
Assistant told investigators Malcolm said:
“Honeymoon emergency money.”
She assumed gambling or luxury.
No knowledge.
Then zip ties.
Purchased by Gregory himself two days before wedding.
Hardware store.
Receipt.
Not Malcolm.
That mattered.
He could not say father packed everything.
Then burner phone.
Bought cash by Malcolm’s driver? Driver said instructed to buy prepaid phone for executive travel. No knowledge.
Malcolm activated and used.
Then cream folder.
Printed at Hartman Capital office.
A junior analyst assembled based on documents Malcolm’s CFO forwarded.
She believed Ashlynn had approved in principle.
When she saw my forged signature in news? She contacted investigators.
“Mr. Hartman said signature block was from prior document for formatting.”
She thought final would be re-signed.
Then why already submitted to lender?
Malcolm sent personally.
The analyst did not know.
Again.
Scheme relied on using normal employees for pieces without telling whole.
Then Hartman CFO, Stephen Lang.
Did he know?
He knew firm desperate.
He knew Malcolm expected Ashlynn pledge.
He repeatedly asked:
“Has she signed?”
Malcolm said:
“Marriage closes tomorrow.”
Stephen interpreted agreement forthcoming.
Then lender call.
Stephen used forged package.
Did he know signature fake?
He claimed no.
Forensic email:
STEPHEN:
Need Ashlynn direct confirmation.
MALCOLM:
After honeymoon.
STEPHEN:
Then why submit now?
MALCOLM:
Pre-clearance.
Stephen:
Don’t put me in bad position.
He sensed.
But did not stop.
He later cooperated.
No charges after prosecutors found insufficient proof of knowing fraud before submission.
He resigned.
Then Melissa’s NDA.
Civil lawyers invalidated gag portions relating to criminal conduct.
She chose public statement.
Not necessary but she wanted.
“I was not Ashlynn before Ashlynn. I was myself, and what happened to me mattered even when no one knew there would be another woman.”
Powerful.
I called.
“That was good.”
“I practiced.”
Then Laura.
Her independent advocate asked whether I wanted to speak.
She had asked for me.
I said yes.
Video call.
Laura’s speech slow.
“Ashlynn.”
“Yes.”
“Greg hurt you?”
My throat tightened.
“Yes.”
She closed eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t do it.”
“I made him with Malcolm.”
“No.”
She looked at me.
“I stayed.”
I understood temptation to carry blame.
I said:
“You staying explains part of what he saw. It did not make his choice.”
Laura stared.
Then smiled faintly.
“You sound like letter.”
“Your letter?”
“Yes.”
“Gregory kept it.”
She started crying.
“He read?”
“Yes.”
“Then he knew.”
“Yes.”
That was painful for both.
Then she asked:
“Did you marry him because he was kind?”
I almost laughed.
“Yes.”
“He could be.”
“I know.”
She looked away.
“Malcolm could too.”
There.
The inheritance was not violence alone.
It was confusion between kindness and permission to hurt later.
Then Laura said:
“Do not save Greg for me.”
I swallowed.
“I’m not.”
“Good.”

No mother asking victim to forgive son.
That line made me understand Gregory had failed Laura too.
