Chapter 9 - The Bride Who Left with My Blood

Judge Bell’s private aircraft never took off.

Airport cameras showed him and Seraphina abandoning the car near a maintenance road. A second vehicle collected them outside the security perimeter.

The vehicle belonged to Bellmont Floral.

The same company whose badge Leah used to enter the wedding.

The florist was not an innocent vendor.

It was another Sterling shell company.

The refrigerated case contained blood samples from my mother, me, and prenatal testing performed without my knowledge.

With those samples, Seraphina could support or challenge Ashford ancestry claims.

She could create false paternity results.

She could assign my daughter’s bloodline to another infant.

The law treated DNA as powerful evidence.

The Sterlings treated it as editable paperwork.

My obstetrician recommended delivery after another episode of bleeding.

Clara’s heart rate dropped twice during the night.

Waiting became more dangerous than surgery.

The independent medical team scheduled a cesarean section at dawn.

Every staff member underwent identity verification.

Two federal agents stood outside the operating room.

Diana personally examined the infant bracelets.

I still could not stop shaking.

Natalie? no. Audrey. Keep.

Diana noticed.

“You are safe.”

“No one can promise that.”

“You are right.”

She adjusted the chair beside my bed.

“Then I promise this. Every decision will be shown to you before it is made.”

That was the closest thing to safety I could accept.

Leah delivered first at the other hospital.

Her baby was a girl.

Malcolm was not the father.

The original prenatal report had been altered to suggest a male fetus because Celeste needed Malcolm to continue funding Bennett Maternal Services.

Leah’s child had no Sterling bloodline value.

That made her more vulnerable.

Diana moved both mother and baby into federal protection immediately.

The infant file marked succession confirmation was false from the beginning.

Celeste never needed Leah’s baby as an heir.

She needed a second newborn present so records could be switched if anything happened to Clara.

Leah’s daughter was intended to become the reported dead infant.

My baby would leave under her identity.

The discovery explained the matching identification number.

It also explained the message.

The wrong woman went into labor.

The sender expected Leah’s labor to begin first so the record exchange could occur before mine.

When both women went into labor at the wedding, the timing became unstable.

Someone inside the conspiracy panicked.

The secure phone received another anonymous message.

A live photograph showed Seraphina inside a medical vehicle wearing surgical clothing.

Judge Bell sat beside her.

Between them rested the refrigerated case.

Beneath the photograph:

ONE ASHFORD CHILD IS ENOUGH.

I showed Diana.

She traced the transmission to a road leading north from the vineyard.

The destination appeared to be an abandoned mission hospital owned by Sterling Health Foundation.

Vale had transferred newborns there before.

Federal teams moved toward the property.

At the same time, my surgery began.

The operating room lights felt too bright.

Every metallic sound made me turn my head.

The anesthesiologist explained each medication before administering it.

The surgeon spoke calmly.

Diana remained outside the glass observation panel.

When the first incision began, I thought of the locked restroom.

Julian’s hand on my arm.

Seraphina choosing red fabric.

Celeste discussing my death while I slept.

Then Clara cried.

The sound was small, sharp, and alive.

I began sobbing.

The nurse lifted her high enough for me to see.

Ten fingers.

Ten toes.

Dark hair pressed against her head.

A verified bracelet was placed around her ankle while three witnesses watched.

The pediatrician carried her toward the assessment station.

The lights failed.

Emergency power activated one second later.

One second was enough.

A nurse screamed.

May you like

The bassinet beside the assessment table was empty.

Continue to the next part: Audrey wakes from surgery to discover someone used the hospital blackout to reach Clara despite federal protection.
