Chapter 7 - THE BROTHER WHO STOPPED LAUGHING

Chase had spent most of his life doing what Kyle instructed.

Kyle was the oldest.

Brad was the loudest.

Chase became the one behind the camera, close enough to every cruel decision to record it and far enough away to call himself an observer.

His cooperation did not make him innocent.

It made him useful.

He gave the receiver access to seven years of unedited footage.

The archive contained willing pranks, staged arguments, paid actors, hidden sponsorships, and several incidents where participants withdrew consent before publication.

Kyle ignored those withdrawals.

Brad edited out objections.

Chase preserved originals because Grant taught him never to destroy leverage.

The Nebraska footage began before I entered the minimart.

Grant spoke through Kyle’s private earpiece.

He instructed Brad to take my purse.

He told Chase to film my breathing because visible panic increased engagement.

He reminded Kyle to return before my medication window became dangerous.

The men debated how long that meant.

Kyle chose forty five minutes.

Grant said thirty.

They drove farther than planned because Brad wanted a wider highway shot.

By the time Kyle turned around, Evelyn’s minivan had already left.

Grant recognized the maroon vehicle from Chase’s livestream.

He told the brothers not to return to the station.

“Why?” Rachel asked.

Chase looked toward Evelyn.

“He knew who she was.”

Grant had spent years tracking the people connected to his old federal case.

Evelyn sentenced his accountant after Grant cooperated.

The accountant later claimed Grant created the entire fraud and sacrificed him.

Evelyn never determined that issue because the evidence before her concerned the accountant’s conduct.

Grant blamed her anyway.

He collected photographs of her public appearances, travel lectures, and retirement events.

He knew she drove an old maroon minivan across the Midwest each summer.

Her presence at the gas station transformed the prank into a threat.

“He thought Evelyn was following us,” Chase said.

“I was traveling to Colorado,” Evelyn replied.

“Grant did not believe that.”

He ordered Kyle to find out where Evelyn took me.

That explained the false kidnapping report.

It was not only an effort to regain control of his wife.

Kyle wanted law enforcement to locate the former judge.

Evelyn’s second phone had summoned a private security team she used while traveling with sensitive court archives.

The dark vehicle approaching from the opposite highway carried two retired federal security officers.

They followed at a distance and confirmed nobody pursued us.

Grant remained somewhere near the gas station for hours.

Walter’s exterior camera captured another vehicle entering after midnight.

A gray sedan stopped beside the trash barrel.

A man retrieved the broken SIM card pieces.

The face was hidden beneath a cap.

The license plate belonged to G M Advisory.

Grant had collected my damaged SIM because it could contain authentication data connected to company accounts.

He also removed Kyle’s discarded energy drink can and searched the dust near the pumps.

He was looking for the bank card Evelyn had preserved.

Chase gave investigators a message Grant sent afterward.

The judge has the owner card. Move before she understands Lena is the company.

Grant did not fear me because I was powerful.

He feared the legal identity he had built around me.

Once Evelyn and Rachel understood the structure, every company account became evidence.

The receiver froze payments to G M Advisory.

Grant disappeared from his known residence in Arizona.

Kyle blamed Chase publicly.

Brad threatened him privately.

The brothers’ channel audience watched their unity collapse through leaked messages.

I did not celebrate.

Every exposure produced more threats.

Every new file showed another person harmed.

The receiver proposed selling the harmless parts of Mercer Road Media and using the money for claims, taxes, employee wages, and legal costs.

I agreed to waive any immediate personal distribution.

Kyle called me foolish.

“You are giving away millions to strangers.”

“They are not strangers to the company you built.”

“It was our future.”

“It was my name and your control.”

He became silent.

Then he said something that unsettled me.

“Ask Evelyn why she was carrying Grant’s original case file in her minivan.”

I looked toward her.

May you like

She did not deny it.

Continue to the next part: Evelyn admits her presence in Nebraska was not entirely accidental, but the file she carried suggests Grant had been preparing Lena’s disappearance for years.
