Chapter 10 - Sophie's Visits While Ryan Was Gone

Sophie was thirteen months when Ryan entered custody.
She did not understand prison.
Family court had to decide contact.
Before sentencing he had progressed to unsupervised day visits.
No safety incidents.
Then incarceration changed logistics.
Dr. Aaron Whitmore recommended:
Short video calls twice weekly if Sophie engaged.
No in-person jail visits during first months due age.
Review later.
I agreed.
Not because Ryan deserved.
Because Sophie recognized him.
First video:
She stared at screen.
“Da.”
Ryan cried.
I looked away.
He said:
“Hi, Soph.”
She slapped screen.
Then wandered.
Call lasted four minutes.
Next:
Seven.
At eighteen months:
She could say Daddy.
Ryan remained seated under correctional system video.
No blaming me.
No asking:
“Mommy keeping you?”
He followed script:
I love you.
I’m glad to see you.
I’ll see you next time.
Then a child-development specialist approved occasional in-person visits at minimum-security/county-facility family room? Ryan sentenced state maybe low-security facility. We can keep video only until release because 14 months not long. Good.
No prison tourism.
Then Diane.
No direct Sophie contact during probation.
She sent birthday card through lawyer.
No gifts?
I allowed one card.
It said:
Happy second birthday, Sophie. Grandma loves you.
No apology through child.
Good.
Then I moved.
After house sale, I rented townhouse near my sister Megan Bennett.
Two bedrooms.
Smaller.
I used none of inheritance for luxury.
Kept $214k invested.
Emergency fund from house proceeds.
Returned to work full-time when Sophie ten months.
Daycare.
The same kind of ordinary decision Ryan had once framed as proof I could not parent.
Then my anxiety.
I checked daycare app constantly.
Therapist:
“How many times today?”
“Thirty-seven.”
“Goal?”
“Ten.”
“I’ll do twenty.”
“Good.”
No perfect healing.
Then family.
Forty relatives fragmented.
Some stayed close to Diane.
Some to me.
No requirement choose.
Linda became Sophie’s Great-Aunt Linda.
Asked before visits.
Ben apologized.
Melissa became occasional friend because guilt turned into responsibility, not forced closeness.
Diane’s sister Carol refused to believe scheme was coercive.
“She only wanted family together.”
I stopped inviting her.
Boundary.
Then Ryan wrote me through parenting app despite custody? While incarcerated app messages monitored maybe allowed.
I know apologies are not custody evidence. I am sorry I dragged you. I am sorry I tried to make ordinary postpartum exhaustion look like illness. I am sorry I used Sophie as leverage. You don’t have to respond.
I did not.
Months later:
I signed release allowing evaluator access to treatment participation. I will follow whatever transition is ordered when I leave.
No ask.
Good.
Then he completed:
Violence intervention.
Cognitive behavioral work.
Parenting course.
Financial ethics/legal decision program? Maybe not. He took co-parenting.
He lost job.
Upon release needed work.
His retirement remained.
He retained house-sale funds.
No impoverishment narrative.
Then Diane’s incarceration/probation.
She completed county custody.
Returned to same large house.
Birthday table still there.
Linda stopped going for year.
Diane entered therapy reluctantly.
At first she wrote me:
I’m sorry things got out of hand.
I returned through attorney:
That is not an apology I can use.
Six months later:
I’m sorry I helped Ryan create false evidence against you and treated losing Sophie as a tool to make you obey us. I’m sorry I held Sophie while Ryan hurt you and refused to give her back. I’m not asking for contact.
I kept.
No answer.
Then Sophie at two.
She knew photographs:
Mommy.
Daddy.
Aunt Linda.
Aunt Megan.
Diane?
I did not erase.
Photo.
“That’s Grandma Diane.”
“Where?”
“Not visiting right now.”
“Why?”
“Grown-up safety rules.”
Enough.
Then Ryan release date approached.
Family court scheduled reentry hearing.
He had served about fourteen months.
Sophie two years three months.
She recognized him from video.
Question:
How quickly should father return?
Evaluator recommended:
Six weeks supervised in community.
Then daytime if stable.
No overnights for six months.
No Diane present.
Parenting communication strictly app.
Ryan must maintain therapy.
No physical discipline.
No discussing case.
No using relatives to communicate.
Ryan accepted.
No demand equal time.
May you like
That was evidence.
Continue to the next chapter: Sophie remained connected to Ryan through brief, child-centered calls during his incarceration, and when his release approached he did not ask the court to “give back” his daughter—he agreed to rebuild contact from supervised visits all over again.
