Chapter 8 - THE RING PAPERS
The diamond was not a secret key.
No hidden microfilm.
No absurd compartment.
The connection was simpler.
Eleanor’s jewelry trust used one archival file for appraisals, insurance records and provenance.
Charles apparently placed sensitive papers inside the same locked family archive because it was rarely accessed.
“Ring papers” referred to the jewelry archive.
The Vance adoption file had been stored there.
Why?
Eleanor said:
“Charles did not trust the office.”
“Which office?”
“Mercer Hospitality.”
He feared old Vance succession records might create conflict if employees found them.
So he kept them privately.
The wedding ring I wore happened to come from the same archive box decades later.
Did Julian know?
Eleanor said no.
Grant said no.
Then why did Eleanor insist on that specific diamond for me?
Her answer:
“It was Julian’s grandmother’s.”
Family tradition.
Possible.
Then Sarah found appraisal history.
The ring had not been offered to either of Julian’s previous serious girlfriends.
He had never been engaged.
No comparison.

Then the jewelry archive was opened voluntarily under Eleanor’s counsel supervision.

Appraisals.
Photographs.
Insurance documents.
Charles’s correspondence.
And the Vance file.
Fuller than Grant’s copy.
The first pages matched.
Mason Bell.
St. Catherine.
Adoption confirmation.
Mercer share option.
Then a letter from Charles to Eleanor.
Date:
One week after Mercer exercised the share option.
Eleanor,
I do not like this.
Bell is too certain for a man who refuses to show the underlying adoption order.
That stopped everyone.
Charles had doubts.
He wrote:
If Arthur later proves the child was taken improperly, we should unwind the option voluntarily.
Eleanor never told Arthur.
Did she receive the letter?
Yes.
Was there a response?
Handwritten on bottom:
We have counsel opinion. Close it.
Initials:
E.M.
Eleanor Mercer.
She stared.
“That could be me.”
“Is it?”
“I don’t remember.”
Sarah asked for handwriting review.
No instant conclusion.
Another Charles letter:
Arthur is still searching. If Bell lied, this becomes more than a shareholder issue.
Then:
Do not destroy any St. Catherine material.
Charles preserved the file.
That was good.
But he still did not tell Arthur.
Why?
Eleanor said Charles feared litigation.
Arthur laughed bitterly.
“So he chose self protection.”
Maybe.
Then an invoice.
Mason Bell billed Mercer for:
Follow up investigation regarding Vance infant placement.
He did more than verify.
What did he investigate?
Report missing.
One handwritten note:
Placement family located. No contact recommended.
Arthur stood.
“They knew where she was?”
My heart stopped.
Eleanor looked genuinely shocked.
“I never saw that.”
Sarah examined.
Note in Charles’s handwriting.
If true, Charles or Bell may have located my adoptive placement family.
Could Charles have found me decades ago?
The note lacked name.
No address.
No supporting report.
Maybe Bell claimed he located placement.
Maybe he lied.
Arthur whispered:
“Charles could have told me.”
Yes.
Then another letter from Charles to Mason Bell.
I will not contact the family until I know whether placement was lawful. Provide court certified order.
Mason never did.
Charles did not contact.
Then final note.
Bell says records sealed and child better left undisturbed. Eleanor agrees.
Arthur stared at her.
“You agreed?”
Her face tightened.
“I believed a child had been adopted into a stable family.”
“You knew I was searching.”
“I believed you were dangerous to the placement.”
“Based on what?”
“Bell.”
Mason Bell had shaped everyone’s story.
To Arthur:
The child died.
To Rebecca Lane:
Temporary medical placement.
To Mercer:
Adoption final, father rights gone.
Then perhaps later:
Placement stable, do not disturb.
Why?
Money?
Covering malpractice?
Private adoption fraud?
We still did not know.
Then Sarah found one document none of us expected.
A check.
Charles Mercer to Mason Bell.
One hundred thousand dollars.
Date:
Six months after the option purchase.
Purpose:
Private resolution.
Eleanor said:
“I have no idea.”
Large.
What was being resolved?
Back of check referenced:
Lane matter.
Rebecca Lane.
My biological mother.
Arthur’s face changed.
“What did Charles settle with Rebecca?”
Maybe nothing.
Could be Bell’s legal work.
Then a corresponding deposit record.
Mason Bell Trust Account.
Client reference:
R.L.
Could indicate Rebecca received money.
Did she?
Her estate records might show.
Arthur had some of her recovered papers from after death.
Sarah reviewed.
One account deposit:
Ninety thousand dollars.
Same week.
Sender hidden as law firm trust.
Rebecca received money.
Why?
Her diary entry:
They paid me to stop asking where Clara went.
I stopped breathing.
Arthur closed his eyes.
My mother had been paid.
By whom?
She wrote:
Bell says the Vance side wants this over.
Arthur whispered:
“I never knew.”
Could Mason have lied and used Mercer money while telling Rebecca it came from Vance?
Yes.
Could Mercer knowingly pay her to stop searching?
Possible.
Eleanor looked sick.
She said:
“Charles told me the payment resolved a threatened claim against Mercer.”
“What claim?”
“She said our succession option benefited from her daughter’s disappearance.”
Rebecca had connected it.
She threatened to sue Mercer.
Charles paid settlement?
Then Sarah asked:
“Did settlement require her to stop looking?”
Eleanor said:
“No.”
But Rebecca believed it did.
We needed agreement.
Missing.
Then Julian’s current case produced a new twist.
He had searched the ring archive six months ago.
Access log.
Same week Eleanor told him I controlled fifty one.
He had opened the box.
He had seen the Vance file.
He knew about Rebecca’s payment.
He knew Charles suspected Bell.
He knew the old adoption issue was far uglier than he ever told me.
And three days later, he proposed our honeymoon destination.
St. Catherine’s old headquarters had been converted into a luxury coastal inn.
