Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Came for the Suitcase

Paula arrived before noon.

Sergio remained inside the car.

She walked toward Robert’s front door wearing the same beige trench coat from the previous evening.

Her expression was impatient rather than concerned.

Robert opened the door but blocked the entrance.

“Where were you?”

“Working.”

“You said you had to travel.”

“My plans changed.”

“Why did you not answer your phone?”

“I was busy.”

Paula looked past him.

“Ruby, get your things.”

Ruby stood near the stairs.

The moment she saw her mother, her body stiffened.

She did not move.

Paula’s voice sharpened.

“Now.”

Robert stepped farther into the doorway.

“She is not leaving.”

Paula stared at him.

“You do not decide that.”

“I have already contacted police and child protection services.”

Her confidence remained.

“I know.”

Robert noticed the lack of surprise.

Paula removed a folder from her handbag.

Inside was an emergency temporary order stating that Ruby had to be returned to her legal parent unless police found immediate evidence of danger.

The document had been signed that morning.

The caseworker named on the application was Melissa Collins.

Robert looked at his sister.

“You contacted Melissa.”

“She knows our family.”

“She was also assigned to the school report.”

Paula’s expression changed slightly.

Only enough to confirm it.

“You knew the school reported Sergio.”

“Children misunderstand discipline.”

“Ruby says he withholds food.”

“She refuses meals.”

“She asked whether she was allowed to eat today.”

Paula looked toward Ruby.

Anger appeared before concern.

“What did you tell him?”

Ruby moved behind the staircase.

Robert lowered the folder.

“Do not question her.”

Paula pushed past him.

“Ruby, come here.”

Robert stepped between them.

“She is afraid of you.”

“She is afraid because you are confusing her.”

Sergio left the car.

He walked toward the house with both hands inside his pockets.

Robert turned.

“I told you not to come here.”

Sergio smiled.

“You do not give orders.”

Ruby saw him through the doorway.

She made a small sound and ran toward the guest bedroom.

Paula called after her.

“Stop being dramatic.”

Robert looked at his sister.

“Your daughter ran from him.”

“She knows she is in trouble.”

“For being hungry?”

Paula’s face hardened.

“You have always judged me.”

“I am looking at Ruby.”

“You think because you have a clean house and homemade dinners, you understand parenting.”

“I understand children should not ask permission to eat.”

Sergio stepped closer.

“She lies.”

Robert held up his phone.

“You told me she was difficult. You admitted the pantry is locked.”

“I never admitted anything.”

“The call was recorded.”

Panic crossed Sergio’s face.

Paula looked toward him.

“You spoke to Robert?”

“He called me.”

“You said nothing stupid, right?”

Their shared fear exposed more than either answer could.

A police vehicle stopped near the curb.

Officer Rebecca Hayes approached with a child protection supervisor named Karen Mills.

Melissa Collins was not with them.

Karen had reviewed the family connection and removed her from the case.

Paula immediately handed over the temporary order.

Karen read it.

“This does not override an active safety investigation.”

“My daughter belongs with me.”

“Ruby does not belong to anyone,” Karen replied. “She is a child under legal protection.”

Officer Hayes asked to speak with Ruby privately.

Paula objected.

Karen refused to allow her inside the room.

Robert waited downstairs while the interview took place.

Sergio paced near the front window.

Paula sat with her arms folded.

Neither asked whether Ruby was okay.

Twenty minutes later, Officer Hayes returned.

Her expression was controlled.

“We need to search your residence.”

Paula stood.

“Based on what?”

“Ruby described a locked pantry, a locked bedroom, and a camera used to watch her while she ate.”

Sergio looked toward the door.

The officer noticed.

“You need to remain here.”

Paula became pale.

“There is no camera.”

Ruby appeared at the top of the stairs holding Ms. Foster’s note.

“Yes, there is.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Her voice trembled.

“It is inside the smoke alarm.”

Sergio’s face collapsed.

Paula stared at him.

“What camera?”

Robert realized his sister might not know everything.

That did not make her innocent.

It made the betrayal more complicated.

Police searched Paula’s home.

Inside the kitchen, the pantry door had a lock positioned too high for Ruby to reach.

The refrigerator also had a chain.

A camera hidden inside the smoke alarm faced the dining table.

Investigators found dozens of video files on Sergio’s computer.

The footage showed Ruby eating alone while a timer counted down.

If she did not finish quickly enough, Sergio removed the plate.

If she asked for more, he mocked her.

If she cried, he sent the recording to someone.

Robert felt sick when police explained it.

“Who did he send them to?”

Officer Hayes looked toward Paula.

“Your sister.”

Paula covered her mouth.

“No.”

The messages appeared on Sergio’s phone.

He had sent clips to Paula while she worked.

Sometimes she responded with a sad face.

Sometimes she wrote:

Do not be too hard on her.

But she never called police.

She never returned home.

One message contained the most devastating reply.

Maybe missing dinner will finally teach her.

Paula stared at the screen.

“I was angry.”

Ruby stood beside Robert.

Her mother looked toward her.

“I did not mean it.”

Ruby lowered her eyes.

Paula stepped forward.

Robert blocked her.

“You do not get to ask her to comfort you.”

Sergio tried to leave through the back door.

Police stopped him.

He was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering.

Paula was not arrested immediately.

But Ruby was placed under Robert’s emergency care.

The decision caused Paula to collapse into tears.

Not because she had suddenly understood everything.

Because she had lost control of the outcome.

Then investigators examined Sergio’s videos more closely.

One file showed another child sitting at the same table years earlier.

A boy Robert recognized.

Paula’s first child.

The son she claimed had gone to live with his father after their divorce.

Continue to the next part: Robert will learn what happened to Paula’s missing son, while Ruby realizes she was not the first child Sergio trained through hunger and fear.
