Chapter 23 - The Last Account
At eighty-two, I closed the last account that still carried someone else’s name.
A joint warehouse-club membership with Nicole.
Ridiculous.
Not bank.
Not debt.
Just membership.
We laughed.
“End of era.”
“Yes.”
Then financial adviser reviewed estate.
Assets:
Retirement investments.
Condo proceeds? I had sold condo when moving senior living maybe.
Cash.
Life insurance small.
No debt.
Ava beneficiary.
Some charitable gifts.
Nicole, if alive, specific amount? I chose $20,000 and family jewelry because sister. Not obligation.
Lucy and Mia trusts/gifts.
Professional executor alongside Ava.
No one had to pay someone else’s bills.
Then adviser asked:
“Any loans receivable?”
“No.”
Ava’s old loan repaid.
Nicole’s repaid.
No informal family balance.

Then family records.

Closed.
Everything.
Ava said:
“I don’t need originals.”
“Neither do I.”
We kept digital summary prepared by lawyer? Fine.
Shredded duplicate papers.
No destruction of official records.
Then she held Diane’s apology.
“Keeping.”
“Yes.”
Nicole’s apology.
“Keeping too?”
Ava thought.
“Yes.”
Why?
“Because they both said I didn’t deserve it.”

Then she asked:
“Mom, did you ever think about suing them civilly?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t?”
“No physical damages beyond therapy, and criminal/family remedies handled safety. I didn’t want litigation just to punish.”
“Could you have?”
“Maybe some claims, but lawyer said value and cost uncertain.”
Good.
No missed revenge payout.
Then:
“Did therapy cost?”
“Yes.”
Diane’s criminal restitution? Did we mention? We didn't. Could have been ordered to reimburse therapy costs. At sentencing we didn't mention restitution. We can say court ordered modest restitution for documented counseling costs, maybe $3,200. Need keep consistent; didn't previously. We can add now? Better not introduce late. Could say health insurance and I paid; no civil recovery sought. Fine.
Then:
“What about Mom’s lawsuit?”
“She paid her own lawyer.”
“No attorney fees to you?”
“We each bore own after dismissal.”
“Fair?”
“Maybe.”
No need perfect punishment.
Then Nicole’s health declined.
Cancer recurred? Earlier early-stage and no recurrence for years. At eighty, recurrence maybe. Could die after. But not needed before final. Let's have she dies at eighty-one? Nicole moved to assisted living after cancer recurrence? Maybe not. Let's keep simple: at eighty-six, Nicole died from pneumonia complications after stable cancer remission. Rachel maybe 83. It adds closure. Need not create too much.
Before death, Nicole asked Ava:
“Do you forgive me?”
But we said she learned not to ask. Maybe at end she doesn't. Ava tells unsolicited. Could be good.
Nicole hospitalized.
Ava visited.
Nicole said:
“Doors open?”
Ava smiled.
“Always.”
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
Ava:
“I forgave you a long time ago.”
Nicole cried.
No demand.
Then Nicole died.
Estate:
Small condo? She may have rented. Retirement savings.
Primary to chosen beneficiaries: maybe half to Ava? She had no children mentioned. Could leave to Rachel and Ava. But no need exact. She could leave most to local arts organization? Better if no kids, she leaves to Rachel 40%, Ava 40%, charity 20. Yet money could complicate. Let's say she left modest estate to Rachel and Ava equally, no conditions. No fight.
Rachel inherits and accepts.
Then only Rachel and Ava remain from core.
At eighty-four, Rachel health declines.
Before final, she asks Ava:
“What should I have done differently?”
Ava:
“Come earlier.”
Rachel laughs through tears.
“You said earlier than planned.”
“I know. Joke.”
Then:
“Nothing?”
“You could’ve yelled more.”
“No.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“You did what I needed.”
What?
“Opened door.”
That phrase becomes final.
