Chapter 4 - THE AUNT WHO HEARD HIM KNOCK
Rebecca remained in custody while prosecutors reviewed charges.
She requested to speak with Mateo.
He refused.
Laura agreed to one recorded meeting with attorneys and investigators present.
She wanted answers no financial document could provide.
Rebecca entered the interview room without makeup or jewelry.
For the first time, she did not look like the elegant woman who maintained control through posture and calm speech.
She looked exhausted.
Laura sat across from her.
“You held me the night Emil disappeared.”
Rebecca began crying.
“I know.”
“You slept in our house for two weeks.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From the truth?”
“From Martin.”
Laura stared at her.
“You knew where my son was.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me search parks, train stations, rivers, and empty buildings.”
“I wanted to tell you.”
“You renovated your living room above him.”
“Martin said someone would hear him through the old floor.”
“So you replaced it.”
Rebecca lowered her face.
“I thought he would move Emil somewhere safer.”
“There was no safe place to imprison a child.”
“I know that now.”
Laura’s voice remained controlled.
“You knew it then.”
Rebecca looked up.
“He threatened Jimena.”
Laura became completely still.
“He said if I opened the room, he would take her too.”
“And you believed obeying him protected her?”
“I did not know what else to do.”
“Call Mateo. Call me. Call the police. Open the door while Martin was gone.”
“He had cameras.”
“You lived above the room.”
Laura leaned forward.
“You ate dinner while Emil was underneath you.”
Rebecca began shaking.
“I could hear him at night.”
The admission filled the room.
Laura’s eyes closed.
“What did he say?”
“At first, he called for you.”
“And later?”
“He asked me to leave the light on.”
Laura pressed one hand against her mouth.
Rebecca continued because silence no longer protected her.
She brought Emil food.
She changed his clothing.
She cleaned the room.
Martin supplied medication through Dr. Voss.
Rebecca sometimes reduced the dose when Martin was away.
She told herself that smaller acts of mercy made her different from him.
They did not open the door.
She hosted Christmas dinner while Emil remained below the floor.
Mateo and Laura attended for less than an hour because grief made celebration unbearable.
Jimena sat near the rug and said she heard scratching.
Rebecca turned on music.
She gave the child hot chocolate and told everyone the heating pipes were noisy.
Later, Martin praised her for remaining calm.
“You did not stay silent only because you were afraid,” Laura said.
Rebecca looked down.
“No.”
“You needed the trust audit delayed.”
“Yes.”
“You needed Martin not to expose the money you stole.”
“Yes.”
“And every day you chose yourself again.”
Rebecca began crying harder.
“Yes.”
Laura did not shout.
She did not threaten her.
She stood and left.
Mateo waited in the hallway.
He saw his wife’s face and opened his arms.
Laura entered them.
“She heard him every night.”
Mateo held her while grief moved through both of them.
Inside the hospital, Emil began remembering the same period.
He described hearing family voices above him.
Jimena laughing.
Mateo walking across the room.
Laura crying during Christmas dinner.
He pounded against the ceiling until his hands hurt.
The music became louder.
After that night, he stopped calling for them whenever visitors came.
He believed they could not hear.
Jimena had heard.
The adults had not believed her.
The investigation into Dr. Samuel Voss revealed that he had never provided legitimate treatment to Emil.
He issued prescriptions under names belonging to patients from another clinic.
He wrote reports describing Jimena’s claims as trauma fantasies.
Those reports served two purposes.
They protected the hidden room from discovery.
They helped Martin prepare a future custody petition portraying both Rivera children as psychologically unstable.
Voss was arrested while attempting to remove records from his office.
Through counsel, he admitted providing medication but claimed he believed Emil was being protected from an abusive father.
No report supported that story.
He had never examined Mateo.
He had received more than three hundred thousand dollars from Martin.
Bank records traced the stolen trust money to a company that owned an abandoned rehabilitation center in western Massachusetts.
The property included residential rooms, medical storage, and an underground garage.
Martin purchased it eight months earlier.
Investigators believed he planned to move Emil there before the trust audit.
The recording beneath the mattress said the move would happen after Mateo’s visit.
Jimena’s discovery forced him to act early.
Federal and state teams approached the property under warrant.
The building appeared empty.
Inside, they found food, bedding, forged identity documents, and a room prepared for two children.
No child was present.
A bloodless but recent struggle had disturbed furniture near the office.
Adam Grant’s wallet lay on the floor.
A computer remained connected to a portable drive.
The files showed Adam had been forced to create false renovation invoices and transfer stolen trust funds through his business.
He complied because Martin held Nora.
Adam also recorded Martin secretly.
In one audio file, Martin discussed Rebecca.
“She believes fear makes her a victim.”
Voss answered:
“She could still confess.”
“She will not. Every hour the boy remains beneath her house becomes another reason she needs me.”
Martin understood guilt as a chain.
Rebecca’s first decision trapped her more effectively than any threat.
A map inside the center showed three marked locations.
Rebecca’s house.
The Rivera trust office.
A private marina north of Boston.
Security footage from the marina showed Martin entering with Adam less than two hours earlier.
They boarded a small charter vessel.
The vessel had not left the harbor.
Its tracking system remained active, but the dock camera showed no one aboard.
Aaron examined the footage again.
Martin and Adam had entered the boat.
Only Martin came out.
He carried a large black bag and Adam’s jacket.
The boat was a decoy.
A service vehicle left through the rear gate minutes later.
The vehicle belonged to the Rivera trust’s property management company.
Martin was using Mateo’s own family assets to disappear.
A traffic camera captured the vehicle heading toward Boston.
