Chapter 6 - The Folder With My Name

The SARAH folder was three years old.

That frightened me more than anything else on Michael’s laptop.

He had not created it after Emily confronted him.

He had been collecting material long before.

A photograph of me crying after my mother’s funeral.

Caption:

Emotional instability.

A text:

I can’t keep anything straight this week.

Caption:

Memory problems.

A picture of one empty wine glass at Thanksgiving.

Caption:

Alcohol use.

My migraine prescription.

A missed dental appointment.

A therapy appointment after Mom died.

Then:

Sarah questions household spending.

Sarah withdraws cash secretly.

Sarah speaks privately with Emily.

Sarah becomes hostile when finances discussed.

Everything ordinary became suspicious once labeled.

Then screenshots.

My sister Laura:

Call me when you’re alone.

I did not remember receiving it.

Another:

I’m worried he answers every question for you.

Another:

Emily asked if she can stay here if you two ever split. Is everything okay?

I had never seen that one.

Phone records later showed Laura’s number had been temporarily blocked twice through our family cellular account.

Michael was account administrator.

Cloud logs showed deletions from our shared tablet.

Not every missing message could be proven.

Enough.

He had been filtering my relationship with my sister.

Then a spreadsheet.

BUDGET CONTROL.

My salary.

My spending.

Cash withdrawals.

Credit limits.

A note:

Cancel secondary card if discretionary spending rises.

That explained a debit card failure after I bought tires without discussing it.

Michael told me the bank flagged fraud.

Maybe the bank did not.

Then:

Move Sarah paycheck to joint only.

He convinced me separate accounts were secretive.

Then a draft family law email.

My wife has become increasingly unstable and is alienating our daughter against me.

Never sent.

Then:

If separation occurs, she may make false allegations.

He prepared his defense before I made allegations.

Then Grace asked:

“Did you know Michael consulted a family attorney?”

“No.”

The attorney’s office confirmed only that an initial consultation occurred.

No privileged details.

Enough to establish he had been thinking about separation and custody.

Then a document called:

INCIDENTS.

Sarah raises voice.

Sarah hides cash.

Emily refuses father access to phone.

Emily becomes hostile after private time with Sarah.

My relationship with my daughter had become evidence stockpiling.

Then something else.

A draft email to my employer.

Not sent.

Sarah has been under severe family stress and may need medical leave.

Michael did not control my job.

But he was preparing language.

Then:

Sarah is overwhelmed with financial responsibilities.

False.

I was excluded from them.

Then Detective Gray traced how Michael found the hospital.

Our family location service.

Emily’s phone location.

He had not guessed.

He monitored.

Then Dana asked me about home safety.

“Will you return to the house with Michael?”

“No.”

“Will you allow him unsupervised contact with Emily?”

“No.”

“Do you believe her?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

My sister Laura had a guest room.

I called.

She answered immediately.

“Sarah?”

“I need somewhere to go.”

“Come.”

No questions first.

That was what safety sounded like.

Then Michael was arrested on initial charges involving child abuse, toxic exposure, intimidation, and medical endangerment.

Financial charges would come after accounting.

His attorney argued for release.

No prior convictions.

Business owner.

Home.

Employment.

The court imposed strict no contact with Emily.

Communication with me through attorneys only where necessary.

He was later released on secured conditions.

The house remained jointly ours.

I chose not to return.

Then he sent through counsel:

Sarah may use home. Michael can temporarily stay elsewhere.

I still said no.

Walls did not become safe because he left them temporarily.

Then forensic accountants found something else.

May you like

Michael had not only drained money.

He had hidden money that belonged to me.
